Jane let the music play for a few more seconds before she switched it off. "What, you don't like it? And here I thought all humans liked inane pop music."

Ender rubbed his forehead, then cast a glance towards the shop. "Howard is a much quieter taskmaster than Tony ever was," he said, "And I'd like to keep the place that way."

Which was naturally when the sound systems of the shop kicked in, and Ender was forced to get up and switch all of them off manually before he got fired for disturbing Howard's midday tweaking session. Or whatever else the man got up to when Ender didn't see him.

"What is the Jedi diet?"

"Whatever the species is compatible with," Ben said, grinning. "But we don't have to be vegetarian or anything. Some reporter asked Jaina that."

"Somehow, I've never pictured Jaina as anything but the red meat diet type," Ender admitted. "Though I should probably not stoop to assuming."

"I think it was phrased as 'as protectors of all life, shouldn't you only eat vegetables'," Ben said. "I think Jaina just about beat them with her shoe."

"Vegetables are life, too," Ender said helpfully. "Stick to dirt, and whatever falls off a tree on its own."

Ben made a face. "Sounds delicious."

"You must make sacrifices, young Jedi," Ender said, and poked him in the chest.

"I'm not prepared to make that level of sacrifice," Ben said. "I draw the line just before Karla's cookies."

"I suppose there is wisdom in that," Ender said, keeping his face straight.

"I'm really doing it for you," Ben said, eyes sparkling. "I'm trying not to get stomach problems that would keep you awake."

"Oh, thank you very much for that, Mister Skywalker," Ender said, and a little smile did play on his face this time. "I am very grateful for your superior planning abilities."

"I love those little smiles," Ben blurted, then blushed. "That wasn't supposed to be out loud."

"Well I, for one, am terribly affronted," Ender said with a soft laugh.

"Hush, you," Ben said, leaning in to give him a kiss. "You know too much about me as it is."

Ender cupped Ben's cheek with one hand, kissing him back. "I don't think this is such a terrible thing for me to know."

"And if you hadn't figured it out by now--" Ben babbled.

Ender thought of offering up a witty rejoinder, but he didn't have one.

Shutting Ben up with a deeper kiss seemed like a better idea.

Ben had no objection at all to that form of communication. "Hi there," he finally said when he came up for breath.

"I like you," Ender said, smiling. "In case that wasn't abundantly clear."

"I certainly hope so," Ben said, chuckling. "Because I missed seeing that memo if that's how we're supposed to greet everyone."

"I'd rather you don't, even if it was," Ender said. He ruffled Ben's hair.

"I think I'll keep that just for you," Ben decided.

Ender smiled a little again.

Then he pursed his lips, and said, "How much Force philosophy did you get taught when you were younger?"

"A fair chunk," Ben replied. "Jacen was my Master, and the subject fascinated him."

"What did you think?"
