Caritas, Thursday evening (1/26)

Kenzi was apparently 'experimenting' with liquors again, and was placidly ignoring all customers.

Tino was standing back with a fire extinguisher. That little barbecue lighter got waaaay too close to some of the glasses.

Who are watching the bar warily.

Oddly, Rebecca decided that a bar where teenagers could get in without fake IDs was somehow less fun than a bar where they couldn't. This probably had something to do with the kid bartender playing with a lighter, because Rebecca really liked this top and didn't want it to catch fire.

So she sat on Tino's side of the bar for her own safety, nursing a cocktail and peering around to see who else was around.

"It's usually a little safer in here, I promise," Bruce said, nodding toward Kenzi.

"If this is what she does at the bar she works at, I wonder what she does at the sex store," Rebecca mused, tilting her head.

"I have to assume the explosions are much more entertaining," Bruce offered.

"Probably," Rebecca agreed with a bit of a grin. "Here, there's only so much entertainment you can get out of a martini fire."

"Especially since Tino will probably put it out quickly," Bruce said with a shrug. "Meanwhile, the cleanup for other store will take a good, long time."

"I'm almost surprised this hasn't happened yet."

"Are we sure it hasn't?"

"I'd hate to find out that it did happen and I hadn't heard about it," Bruce said. Mainly because he thought he knew all of the likely to explode buildings. HE HAD WEIRD HOBBIES, OKAY? "I usually listen to radio, too."

"So there are limits to people's incompetence," Rebecca concluded, with another side-eye in Kenzi's direction. "Good to know."

"Usually it's lower than, 'blew something up unintentionally,'" Bruce said. "But Fandom's special sometimes."

With another little shrug, Bruce flashed a smile. "Hi. I'm Bruce."

Good thing Bruce hadn't happened to walk by 307 on Tuesday, then, or he'd've had to reevaluate that stance.

"Rebecca," she said, offering a smile of her own. Totally not a flirty one or anything. Nooooo. "Haven't seen you around."

"I've been pretty busy so far this semester," Bruce said. "But it seems like I picked a good night to take a break."

"What makes you say that?" Rebecca wondered, totally not playing coy at all. Except she so was. Oh, Becs.

"Good company," Bruce said. "If you weren't here, I'd probably be talking to the band just to keep a safe distance. And they're terrible at conversation."

What with the lack of vocal chords.

"Plus there's the odor issue," Rebecca supplied. Then with a flirty little smile that was somewhat more obvious: "Can't say I really mind the company tonight either."

"I try," Bruce said, letting a little chuckle escape. "You're one of the newer students, right? I think I would have noticed you around before if you weren't."

"Shiny and new," Rebecca confirmed. "And here I thought I was pulling the whole 'practiced veteran' thing off pretty well."

"Sorry. But you still need a little bit of practice if you're going to pull that one," Bruce said. "But it was a very good effort."

Rebecca wrinkled her nose. Adorably, if she did say so herself. "I'll have to work on it," she said, leaning forward just a touch. Because she was subtle, really. "Any suggestions?"

"It's a small community, so most of the veterans have met each other at least in passing," Bruce said, leaning in slightly for the sake of conspiring. Really. "So when I introduced myself, you might have claimed we had a class together."

"It wouldn't have worked on me, of course. But it might on someone if you claim it was Ethics."

"Good to know," Rebecca noted with a studious little nod. Because that was totally the point of the leaning and talking conspiratorily. Not to show cleavage or anything. "Claim classes in common. Got it. Anything else?"

"Well, you could always try to just distract the other person," Bruce said, mostly maintaining eye contact. Mostly. "I don't know how a shy girl like you would manage that, though."

"Shy?" Rebecca repeated, grinning and leaning forward a little more. "Me?"

So... there was just going to be a hand on Bruce's leg now. God, Rebecca.

"My mistake," Bruce said, placing his hand on hers as he leaned in a little more. "But now I'm curious to find out how far off I was."

"I think that can be arranged," Rebecca all but purred. Liiiike a ho. "Shall we?"

Bruce put money down on the bar to pay for both of their drinks and some hazard pay for Tino.

"Lead the way," Bruce said.

Bruce had been working very hard recently. Researching, training, school work, online classes... All that work and he hadn't done any recon at a bar for a long time.

So he sat down, nodded to Tino for his regular drink, and tried not to pay attention to any potential explosions.
