Just Outside the Trooper Station, Tuesday

Most of the town was, well... out of town.

So Jake was taking this opportunity to make sure the Troopers were in shape by having them run laps around town.

"Where in the instructions did I say 'and it's okay if you want to stop by the store to get a Squishy'?" Jake demanded. "You!" Whatever his name was. Jake didn't know any of them except Ralph. He was mentally coining this one 'Desmond' though. No reason. "Go again. And no side trips."

Coming back from a trip to the mainland, Audrey stopped when she saw what was going on, stopped, marveled, and took a seat on the ground to watch.

What, it was a quiet town otherwise.

"Whatta ya think: as good as a concert?" Jake inquired once he spotted Audrey, nodding in the direction of the Troopers.

"All it's missing is some Freebird and I'd put it right on par," she nodded.

"I'm not sure I wanna hear any of them attempt to sing something," Jake admitted.

"Are you sure? Not even once?" She sort of did, admittedly. "It could be like karaoke without the alcohol."

Jake pondered that. "Okay," he said, as the Troopers came around from another lap. "Pick one."

"Him," she said, nodding towards the closest one. Going the easy route without naming anyone specifically (and getting it wrong).

"Hey, you there!" Jake flagged him down. "Yeah. You with the hair. Desmond." Was that his name? Probably not. Jake cared little. "Give us a song, b'y."

The Trooper flailed for a few seconds before coming up with a somewhat off-key rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

Well, it was no Freebird. But it was a start. Possibly.

Audrey listened for a moment.

"Not bad, but he should probably stick to troopering," she decided.

"The zombies over at the bar will be so disappointed," Jake said, with mock disappointment.

"No one said it still can't be a hobby," Audrey pointed out. "I mean, no one likes an unhappy zombie."

She paused, thinking about this now. "Or is it the happy zombies you don't want?"

"Unhappy, I think," Jake decided. "I mean, I'm assuming that's what would happen should their supply of mail order brains ever get cut off long enough for them to notice..." He had no idea if those were brains or some sort of meat with artificial brain-flavouring. Wasn't too keen on finding out, either. So long as the zombies were fine with it, so was he.

"That's the thing about this place," Audrey said after a moment. "So many thoughts I just never had a reason to have before coming here."

"Is that a bad thing?" Jake had to wonder.

"It's different," she replied. "But I haven't asked for a transfer out of here, so I definitely wouldn't call it a bad thing."

Even if she had to update her 'days since people went crazy' counter.
