Valentine was mostly working on a new Help Wanted sign, since Britta had decided to contribute her own thoughts about how, apparently, getting a job was like becoming a slave to the corporate puppeteers and everyone needed to be made aware of it through scribblings on the original sign.

She worked on that after putting together a sign announcing that the various collection of potential gifts for Mother's Day were on sale 15% off, unless they were animal soaps. Those she was adding in for free, because they were cute.

Apparently, this job simply required one to make a lot of signs. Valentine felt she was building a whole new useful skill set here.

"I guess the question 'how are you settling in' would be redundant," Ender observed, walking into the shop. He had a bag under his arm - he'd gotten used to bringing people lunches, and Val running a general store wasn't really anything that was going to dissuade him from that.

"A little," Valentine admitted, glad for a distraction with her head tilted curiously at the bag Ender carried, "but you could still ask anyway. Please don't tell me those are leftover sandwiches from your philosophy class."

"No, they're entirely fresh sandwiches," Ender said, putting them down on the counter. "I even managed to save them from my boyfriend, bottomless cavern that he is."

Valentine let out a small snort of a laugh that she would probably always have to hear Ender calling Ben his boyfriend, because it was just so surreal and awesome that that dance was done. "At least you'll never have to worry about leftovers going bad," she said. "How did your class go? It sounded pretty good from what radio had to say."

And that radio. Valentine had been sure to tune in to hear about the class and wound up listening to it about three times. This place.

"I sat down with the students and let them know I probably knew less than they did," Ender supplied, "And then they talked to me. Some of them honestly. One of them with particular candor about how she felt I was catering to the establishment."

There was a slight pause.

"Did she use the word establishment?" Valentine ventured.

"She used the word 'indoctrinated'," Ender ventured right on back.

Val sounded like she'd recognized that.

"Like many a would-be-disenfranchised high school student with too much time on their hands."

"Let me guess," Valentine said, reaching for the graffiti'd Help Wanted sign for Ender to peruse, with all of its liberal use of such language, "Britta Perry?"

Ender's eyes slid over the sign.

"That would be exactly her," he agreed. "I see I'm not the only one who's chosen to take her in."

"Oh, I didn't choose anything," Valentine said, putting the sign down and shaking her head. "That was all Samus's doing. Apparently, she was making Britta compensate for some shoplifting scheme she tried to pull off last semester."

Ender raised an eyebrow. "How late last semester?" he said. "Because she's probably paid that off by now."

Valentine took a second to turn toward the computer on the register to pull up another document for Ender to see. "And there's everything else she's claimed as her own since then. The security cameras in this joint are epic."

And the list was long, though most of it seemed to be cigarettes, Sharpie markers, tampons, and granola bars.

Ender snorted.

He shooed away a few squirrels with his foot - mindful of his surroundings and potential audience as he always was - and added, "I've never seen anyone try too hard at not trying before."

"It's kind of fascinating in a way," Valentine had to admit. "And talking to her is a great exercise in keeping a straight face.""

Ender snorted-- well, no, chuckled this time. "Don't I know it," he said. "I had to sit there while she accused me of being part of the system."

Valentine quirked a little bit of an eyebrow, because that was very interesting ground to tred on, as far as she saw it. On a certain level, she agreed with it, too. They were all part of the system; it was just how you managed yourself in it that made what appeared to be varying degrees of difference.

"Are you?" she asked, nice and open-ended.

"Haven't I always been?" Ender asked, with a very wry quirk of his mouth.

"We all have been," Valentine said, "and we all will be until we're rotting in publicly sanctioned burial grounds. Or, maybe in our case, in a big heap to turn into fertilizer for crops. The whole circle of life: born into the system, die out of the system."

"At least we can look forward to becoming very handsome heads of lettuce," Ender said.

Valentine tilted her head, tapping a finger thoughtfully on her chin. "You sure about that?" she asked.

"Sorry," Ender said, looking contrite. "I didn't realize you had designs on being the big potato."

Valentine tried, but decided to just let her own chuckle out. "Just as long as I'm not a squash."
