The Boards, Wednesday, Summer Showcase Auditions

Jonothon was not nervous about the possibility of putting on a short-notice, small-scale production all on his own, this summer. You shut your face.

What Jono was doing was running around the Boards like a decapitated chicken, putting out tea and lemon water, making certain Joni wasn't underfoot. Or Squall, who was a wildcat. Or Rinoa, who was a finch...

The poster that he'd put up on Saturday was still up, too.

Fandom Island Summer Showcase!

Have a song, an amusing anecdote?
Will you be around to greet the new arrivals at the end of June?
Remember how much you wished somebody had made an informational presentation for you when you were new?
Come audition for our showcase and help traumatize a new wave of residents to the island!

Auditions will be held Wednesday, June 13 and Saturday, June 16
Rehearsals will be Wednesdays and Saturdays
Performance on Sunday, July 1st

All are welcome!

The Boards were open for auditions!

[Up early for timezones and all that, though with a possible slowplay-for-work thing going on. I can sneak pings so long as I make my quota, so I will get to everybody before long unless I'm out for lunch. Open!]

... Look, it's kind of mandatory. And it's possible that Jono had set out some muffins from J,GoB, too. Because it seemed important for some reason.

Pretty much anything will do. If you want to sing during the showcase, show off what your pipes are capable of. If you know an instrument, play it. If you have a story to tell or a monologue prepared, by all means!

What you audition with doesn't have to be the same thing you'll present on July 1st. That's what the two weeks of rehearsals are there for. This is just for showing off what you can do, folks!

"Hello?" Juliet said, as she strolled up to the stage. "I'm here to audition. Could I do a dramatic monologue, or is this singing and storytelling only?"

She was an actress, not a singer or a storyteller.

"Anything that pleases your little heart," Jono replied, leaning back in his seat and smiling faintly. "If you want to monologue at me, luv, who am I to say no?"

She could skateboard across the stage on one foot while juggling gremlins, and he'd probably still consider her for this show. Especially since there wasn't casting for this production, per se. That made things far simpler.

Juliet returned the smile. "You're the director," she said. "You could decide I had to juggle gremlins in this audition and I'd try to do it."

Jono actually kind of liked the sound of that. The director. Musical Director, he had gotten used to. This was sort of like a promotion, in a way, wasn't it?

Way to pat his ego, Juliet.

"Well, unless you've brought some with you, I think the monologue ought to be fine," Jono decided, waving one hand around a little. "Did you have something prepared?"

Juliet nodded. "Uh-huh. It's from Damp Moist Canadian Summer. It's ... maybe a little bit dirty, but it's fun! I'm playing Katie, I'm talking to a guy I just hooked up with and want to dump."

Jonothon grinned a little at that, raising his eyebrows as he leaned back in his seat a little more.

"Sounds intriguing," he decided. "Let's give it a listen, then, shall we?"

As if Jono would take issue with a monologue that was maybe a little bit dirty. Honestly.

"Listen, Coop," Juliet began, coming downstage and leaning toward Jono. "Last night was" -- she paused, as if Katie were trying to figure out how to be tactful -- "really great. You were incredibly romantic and heroic, no doubt about it. And that's great."

Hands folded behind her back, she paced a bit before she spoke again. She was very, very serious, far more serious than the material deserved. "But I've thought about it, and my thing is this. Andy is really hot." She smile,d slipping into a private reverie. "And don't get me wrong, you're cute too, but Andy is like, cut. From marble. He's gorgeous. He has this beautiful face and this incredible body, and I genuinely don't care that he's kinda lame. I don't even care that he cheats on me!" From Juliet's tone, you might get the idea Katie would actually be kind of into that.

"And I like you more than I like Andy, Coop, but I'm 18. And maybe it'll be a different story when I'm ready to get married, but right now, I am entirely about sex. I just wanna get laid. I just wanna take him and grab him and screw his brains out, ya know? So that's where my priorities are right now. Sex. Specifically" -- and here Juliet grinned and flipped her hair -- "with Andy and not with you."

She's picked lighter material than she normally chose, and it worked; while no one was going to give her an Oscar for this, she sounded less artificial than she generally did onstage.

She did, and Jonothon remembered certain auditions past, so he made note of that fact with a nod.

"You're starting to sound more comfortable up there," he shared, meaning that to be a compliment and hoping that she'd take it as such. "Well done, Juliet. You were hoping to do a monologue for the showcase as well, then? Any topic in particular in mind?"

Gremlin juggling, Juliet. Pick gremlin juggling.

Sadly -- though perhaps not for the gremlins -- Juliet just shook her head. "I could repeat the one I just did," she said. "Or something new. Maybe something about camping and how gross it is."

Internally, she was proud she'd earned a compliment.

"They actually have you out there in tents now, don't they?" Jono looked at least somewhat sympathetic at that. Heading out to the cabins had been difficult enough. But then, he'd spent most of his time hiding the stink of burning mutant by hanging out around the campfires, so... "If you wanted to work on something like that, I certainly wouldn't say no. Would you like any help putting a piece together, or can you handle it?"

"They're the worst place I have ever been in my life," which really just went to show how privileged Juliet's life had been to date. "I can start on it. And then maybe you could help me, y'know, make it all polished for the stage?"

She was totally going to make Jeremy help her write.

Who is all on his lonesome. Unless you count the zoo that consists mostly of students turned animals, today.

Which would make an excellent topic for the showcase!

Raven had decided to stick around for awhile after visiting Kennedy the day before (and being able to teleport meant avoiding having to stay in a tent), and that afternoon she gathered up her nerve to peek into the Boards and see if Jono was there.

"Hello?" she called out softly.

Now there was a voice that Jonothon hadn't heard in a while, and would anybody blame him if his heart skipped a little at the sound of it? Or if his mouth went a little dry, or. Or.

"Raven?" He pulled himself to his feet, turning to face her and unconsciously squaring his shoulders a little as he worked on keeping his own nerve from fleeing for the hills, too. "I... It's been... Hi."

Eloquent as always, Jonothon.

It'd been twice as long for her, given the Kaeleer time difference.

"Hello," she said again. "It is good to see you. I hope you have been well."

"No new concussions, you'll be happy to hear," he reported. And then kind of winced a little, because, wow, that wasn't what she was asking and he knew it. "I mean... I've been doing well enough. It's been a bit of back-and-forth between here and New York, lately. So... Keeping busy."

Which was good. Busy meant that he didn't have time to get down on himself. Meant that he felt functional.

"How've you been? Spending the summer in Kaeleer, I think?"

"I am glad to hear that," Raven said. And don't think for a second she hadn't done a quick empathic check to make sure he wasn't in need of any healing.

She nodded at his next words. "Karla asked me to come to Kaeleer for part of the summer," she said. "Though I have come back each week for my shift at the library. I have missed Fandom a great deal. I have missed...you."

"I've missed you, as well," Jono replied, his words somewhat softer than usual. "And I've worried, a bit. Which... it's ridiculous, I know. You're in good hands in Kaeleer, I don't have any doubt about that, and you can take care of yourself and all. But still..."

Jono was a worrywart. Quelle surprise.

"Kaeleer has been quiet," Raven assured him. "It has been mostly Court lessons and studying." And lonely, since most everyone else was paired off with someone else, and she didn't want to be a third or fifth or seventh wheel.

"And I have been learning to take care of myself better," she said with a tiny smile. She'd faced off her brothers, after all, though she felt a little twinge of guilt about not telling him about that yet. She just hadn't seen him since then.

"Well, that's good to hear," Jonothon decided. "Better quiet than chaotic, more often than not, right?"

... Yeah, quiet would drive Jono clear up a wall.

"So you're... readying yourself for life in a Kaeleeran court? I imagine you'd do well among the Blood, so long as that large bloke with the wings has decided to give you a break on the whole... learning to fight... thing."

"I do not think the quiet will last," Raven said, because it was Kaeleer and even if she was an optimist, she knew better. "But it is nice for now."

She'd never feel like she really belonged, but that was no different from Azarath, so it didn't bother her. Much.

"And I have managed to avoid Prince Lucivar's lessons thus far," she said, smiling as she shook her head. "He is very insistent that I learn how to use his sticks, but I have been able to make excuses." Her luck was going to run out some day, though.

Sooner or later, yes. Lucivar could be very persistent when he set his mind to something.

"I can't imagine headaches and the like are excuses that'll fly with him, hm? I'm almost sorry I didn't end up there for the summer, myself. If anyone needs the regular training, it'd be me."

So that he could do stupid things! Like go up against people with actual powers on the streets of New York! In direct defiance of the law! Woo!
