Jeremy Darling had a job. A job he had been scared into so thoroughly that he actually felt a little afraid for the state of his annual performance review.

No, it didn't make sense. Yes, the fear was still very real.

So if anyone needed him during his first real shift (not counting last week, when he'd had to clean up after those two chicks who'd fought some dogs in the store or something), he was just going to be over here in the expensive menswear section with Hugo Boss and Ferragamo and all his other friends, okay? It was where he felt the safest.

Juliet knew Jeremy had a job, she just ... hadn't actually believed it. Jeremy and jobs did not go together at all in her head. Still, she stopped by in mid-morning and there he was, looking distinctly employee-ish.

"How's it going?" she asked gingerly, as if she expected to be told his spirit was thoroughly broken. "Are there nametags?"

Jeremy pointed at the, yes, nametag pinned to his lapel.

At least he got to wear his own clothes to work, though?

"Yeah." His spirit might not have been entirely broken but he didn't exactly look happy, either. "Jeremy, Demon Marcus, at your service."

Juliet blinked at the nametag as if she'd never seen one before.

"Whoa," she said. "How bad is it? The clothes are nice, so it can't be too awful, right?"

Jeremy shrugged. And pouted a little.

"Well I guess," he said. "I do get to hang out around clothes all day. But I didn't --" He lowered his voice, like he was afraid Callie was eavesdropping. "-- want a freaking job."

"You could walk out," Juliet offered, though she didn't sound like she believed it.

Demons were freaky, okay? She wouldn't do anything to piss one off either.

Jeremy gave her a wide-eyed look just for suggesting that.

"What? No." And then he looked a little embarrassed to have reacted like that. But... "She was talking about maiming people with the new Louboutins."

...

"First, waste of a good shoe," Juliet said, aghast. "Second, that's just wrong. You shouldn't work for somebody who literally wants to maim people."

"But she threatened my annual performance review!"

Just go with it, Juliet.

"Oh no!" Juliet said, caught in her brother's alarm for a moment.

Then: "Why do you have a performance review already? You just started."

"I don't know!"

Of course he didn't, because it had been brought up before he'd even started working here.

But Callie was scary.

"For the same reason as I couldn't quit because I hadn't given two weeks' notice?"

Juliet's eyebrows went up at that. "I'm going to quit asking questions," she decided. "Your answers are making my head hurt."

"I've had a headache for about a week." No he hadn't. Actually, he'd blocked this whole thing out of his head for most of the week, to not deal and just play video games. "I don't know why this is happening to me."

Whining was always an option.

"Because life is totally unfair," Juliet said sympathetically. "This is an, it's always darkest before the dawn, kind of thing. Probably. You'll get something out of it."

"Well..."

He tried to honestly think of something, here. It took a while.

"Think Dad'll be proud of this?"

"Absolutely," Juliet said, and she was even sincere. "Especially because you found it without his help. He'll be stunned. In a good way."

She bit at her lower lip and added, "I'm even a little jealous."

Though not jealous enough to get a job herself.

"You're still not going to get a job, are you?" Jeremy asked. There was no judging in that, though. He was pretty sure he'd just mentally crack if she got a job willingly too.

"No way," Juliet said quickly. "I think play rehearsals will probably start up again pretty soon, and between that and classes I wouldn't have time anyhow."

She shot him a glance. "You aren't going to give him that idea, are you?"

Jeremy made... some kind of a gesture that was meant to convey 'of course not, are you serious?'

"Would I do that to you, Jules?"

"I didn't think so," Juliet said, relaxing. "But you have to admit, the whole" -- she waved a hand vaguely at the nametag -- "thing is pretty disorienting."

"You're telling me," Jeremy sighed. Because this was a hardship.

Standing next to pretty clothes all day. "I don't know if I'm equipped to handle this, you know, with all this... responsibility. George used to work at the record store and I never got how she did it, either."

Wow I haven't had anyone with a non-teaching job in a year. Feels weird.
