Starting at the Causeway and then through town, Tuesday evening
It had been two weeks since Allie had walked out through the gates of Eden and into the mob of rabids, katana slicing at an inhuman speed. Two weeks since she'd left behind Zeke and Caleb and the few humans she could almost call friends. Eden wasn't the place for a vampire, Allie knew that, yet it didn't stop her from sometimes wishing things could be different, that she and Zeke could have had more time together.
But Eden was lost to her and the only thing that mattered now was finding and rescuing Kanin. The last weird, psychic dream connection to her maker had been three nights earlier. Bound and helpless, the glowing tip of a poker rammed through her stomach, exploding out her back. The smell of blood and burned flesh misting in the air. Unfortunately it hadn't given her any clues as to where he could be. So she kept walking. It was the only thing she could do.
The light through the trees was the first thing the caught Allie's eye. Like the light from Eden's outpost it shone through the trees, beckoning Allie forward and across the narrow strip of land to the island.
She stopped as she stepped onto the island proper, shocked that despite the number of heartbeats she could hear, there were no guards, no barricades to stop the rabids from entering the island.
For one night, Kanin could wait. Allie needed to understand what was going on. Was this some other Eden?

Clint was a little lost in his thoughts on his way back through town, mainly thinking about anything else he might need to bring with him, but he wasn't so lost that he didn't notice the unfamiliar woman looking around. "Hi there," he said, giving her a small smile.

Allie cocked her head listening to his heart beat calmly and unafraid. She was certain that would change if he realized what she was, so for the moment, Allie was going to remember to actually breathe even if she didn't really need to.
Sadly, curiosity won out over manners. "What is this place?"

"It's an island," he said, eying her weapon with curiosity. "Fandom, to be exact. Are you new here?"
no subject
"Just walked over," Allie said, briefly glancing back across the causeway. "Why don't you have barricades up? Or guards? Aren't you afraid some rabid is going to come across?"

"A good thing, I guess." Even if she didn't really understand the how or why of it. "Where I'm from, it's not a pleasant place." Hence the weaponry.

Other supernaturals, Jack corrected himself once he came a bit closer, and dipped his head slightly in a curious nod of greeting. "Nice night."

Pleasantries weren't something Allie was used to, not after growing up in the rough life of the Fringe. For a second she was reminded of the books she'd scavenged in the ruins. Stories about life before Red Lung, rabids and vampires.
Another human judging by his heartbeat. But, Allie realized as she took another breath and caught the scent of something earthy and wild, maybe something more.
Her stance changed slightly. Just enough to be defensive if the need arose.
"It's quiet."

"It's not usually. You managed to pick a week when most of the students are off on their break trip."
no subject
"Students? Like from a school?" There hadn't been schools in her world in over sixty years. "Does that mean there are books here?"

He could loan her something, too, but that seemed a bit ... presumptuous, given he didn't even know her name.
"I'm Jack, by the way. I've been on the island about three years, with some breaks. Where are you from that there aren't books?"
no subject
"Just for the night," she nodded. She couldn't spare the time to linger. She had a master to rescue. "I'm Allison...Allie."

"Ah," he said. "Well, the island's generally a peaceful place to spend a night. We work to keep it that way."
He hoped she'd understand the hint: No trouble wanted.

"I'm sorry to hear that," he said, and gave the katana one last wary eyeball. After a moment's more thought, he produced a business card from his pocket. "This is me," he said. "Call or find me at the bar if you run into any problems, all right?"
