The Devil's Nest, Friday Evening

Allie had acquired a few novels this week. Novels of the splashy, trashy sort with half-dressed men and voluptuous women with artfully tousled hair on the covers.

The DJ was in the Halloween spirit and playing a mix of monster themed songs. Allie didn't care. She was too busy reading to find out if the Marquess of Layton was going to find true love with Noelle, the illegitimate daughter of a duke.

[Up way early since I have a wedding tonight.]

Jack came in shortly after sunset. He had meant to stop by to see how Allie was settling in, but Homecoming had trumped that plan in her first week. He smiled a bit to see her reading.

"I can see we have a busy Friday night so far."

"Wild and crazy," she smiled, reluctantly setting the book aside. Finding out if Noelle was going to be rescued after being kidnapped would just have to wait. "There's not a problem if I read while it's slow is there?"

"Not unless Eric tells you differently," Jack said, tilting his head to see the cover of her paperback. "Though there may be a problem with your taste."

That was good to know given the stack of paperbacks Allie was accumulating.

"Why? It's interesting." She'd spent too many years desperate for any book she could lay her hands on to understand the concept of quality literature.

"Is it about a young girl who uses a fiery exterior and sharp tongue to protect her tender heart, and the rogue who seems not to care about anything until he meets her -- and the instant erotic connection they share no matter how they resist it?" Jack asked. (Trashy novels had not changed much since 1900.) "Or are they putting covers like that on books of physics now?"

"You've read it then?" Allie asked with a grin. "Because yes, that's pretty much the story, not physics, whatever that is."

Jack tapped his finger against the cover. "No, but that's the story inside every book with a cover like that. Unless she's a prim governess and he's a wounded widower learning to love again."

"I haven't read that one...Yet." But now she was going to have to look for one like it.

"Read Jane Eyre," Jack advised. "It's the model. And I'm having a good week. Going into space tomorrow. But I came by to ask -- how are you settling in?"

Mental note about the book made, Allie shrugged. "I'm okay. I have a place now. I've met a few people. Most them haven't even cared about me being a vampire. It's weird."

"You aren't the first for most of them," Jack suggested. "Though how blasé people here are about everything can be shocking in itself, at first."

"I'll have a beer," Kaidan said to Tiny, then sank into a seat.

He technically had more paperwork to do, but right now he needed a break, and the Devil's Nest was usually... not so crowded.

Dammit, she was never going to find out what happened to Noelle.

"Technically I'm supposed to be checking your ID," Allie said as she wandered over. "I don't want my boss getting mad at me."

"Oh, right," Kaidan said, reaching into his pocket to produce his Alliance ID card. "Sorry about that. Been kind of preoccupied."

A quick glance at the ID card was all Allie needed. "No problem. I'm getting paid to ask people, so technically you're keeping me working."

Kaidan didn't mind - it was half the reason he preferred the Devil's Nest over Caritas.

"I'm not sure," she admitted. "I only started working here last week. But it was pretty quiet then, other then the DJ. He's still better then the band at the other place though."

Tame or not, the zombies were never not going to make Allie twitch.

"The zombies?" Kaidan winced in sympathy. "Yeah. They're... uh... unique."

They kind of reminded him of husks. Not a good thing.

"If by unique you mean, horrible things that should be put down immediately? Then yes, that's one way to describe them." Allie frowned, realizing she shouldn't sound quite so blood-thirsty to the customers. "Sorry, they remind me a little too much of the rabids at home. I've lost friends to them."

"So we'll just have to stay here and listen to the werewolves howl," she said as the DJ started yet another version of Werewolves of London. "Which isn't a bad way to spend the evening."
