Skywalker Diamond Mine [morning]

The con had been set up, the trap had been carefully laid...all behind the scenes because the writers weren't actually clever enough to write a convincing con.

Cade lounged against the front of the cave--partially blocked with rubble because sometimes the writers remembered continuity--and chewed a piece of gum (which was a lot like heroin) and squinted into the sun.

"He'll be here," he told his partner in crime.

"He better be," Atton said casually, also chewing his gum. "Katherine's not talking."

Which had something to do with this. Somehow.

"She still thinks she's going to stay off the gum or somethin'?" Cade asked. "Keep dreamin'."

Where had Cade's g's gone? No one knew.

Different writer on staff today. Really, subtle continuity was for wusses.

"Oh, when we get this bust, she's gonna come crawling to us for a square," Atton replied, the motorbike by his side briefly disappearing as the editor attempted to slip in a reaction shot from some archive footage.

"So let's meet this so-called Skywalker gone good."

Just then (of course), Luke came around the side of the set mine and avoided the motorbike that was randomly back again.

He was slightly out of breath and still wearing the suit and obnoxious flag pin from yesterday, but with a slight growth of stubble on his cheeks to show how tormented he'd been by their blackmail.

"Here I am," he said, "but like I told you over the phone, I don't own stake in this mine any more. I can't help you."

"Pull the other one," Atton said, relaxing against his motorbike. "You're a Skywalker. Your kind doesn't just 'lose' assets."

"Exactly," Cade said as the music swelled dramatically, "DAD."

Atton threw a look - raised eyebrow and all - towards Cade that the camera took liberal advantage of.

"That's right!" Cade added. "Luke, you are my father!"

The writers' room thought they were hilarious.

"That impossible!" Luke replied.

Those records had been sealed!

"Look, this is all really moving," Atton drawled, "But I want my cut."

"Are you a long-lost fake relative too?" Luke asked.

"No, but I'm the guy with a blaster and a pocket full of documents proving you're not so much on the straight and narrow," Atton said, spitting his gum out on the ground.

"Bet that would end your political career real quick," Cade added. "Just give us the diamond mine and everyone walks away a winner."

But mostly him and Atton.

"It's up to you, old man," Atton drawled.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his leather-bound packet of gum. He offered one to Luke.

Luke blanched, clearly conflicted. The soundtrack thrummed in ominous warning as he reached out for a stick. "I'll talk to my father at Jaina's wedding today," he promised. "You'll get your mine."

"That's what I like to hear," Atton said.

Not at all smarmy or infused with subtext the fangirls would run with.

Cade crossed his arms over his chest to demonstrate his biceps.

"You have an hour."

Or three commercial breaks or four days or something.

"We'll be back," Atton added unnecessarily.

"And if we don't get what we want, we'll blow up the mine."

Again.

"You've been warned," Atton said, jabbing a finger at Luke before turning around and walking away past his disappeared bike.

Luke waited until Atton and Cade had left (Cade's actor had wandered off stage at some point...), then buried his head in his hands and wept.

The daytime Emmy would be his, by God!
