Cafe Luke's, All Day Wednesday

So, somehow, Karla had managed to talk Priestly into loaning out his kitchen to anyone who wanted to help make food for tomorrow's Thanksgiving feast. She still wasn't sure how she'd managed that, considering Priestly's odd reluctance to trust her in the kitchen, but she wasn't going to look the gift chef in...the...uhh, oven?

Okay, that metaphor had gotten away from her a little. Whatever. They still had a kitchen to work with and an amazing freezer that had every ingredient imaginable AND a tram. Between that and Karla to oversee everything, there was no way that this Thanksgiving meal wouldn't turn out amazingly.

...Specifically since Priestly had tapped his cook to actually oversee the kitchen. And several members of StuCo had also planned to keep Karla from interfering too much.

Either way, there was plenty of cooking to do if anyone was interested in helping!

Zhahar was thrilled to be the sister in view today. Not only had she missed being out and about, but she was excited to try her hand at preparing some of these recipes that Sholeh had copied for her in the library.

She just wished that she still retained her powers from the weekend. Being able to accurately measure everything by eye would have been glorious!

Evan really wasn't much of a cook, no, but today was the day before Thanksgiving, and it was starting to really weigh down on him this year. Not only was he unable to go home to spend it with his family, he also was just all-out not allowed to so much as contact his parents in Kansas to let them know he loved them.

He had found himself a pile of potatoes that needed peeling, and he was going to quietly distract himself from his holiday woes with that. The awesome cooking abilities that he had gained over the weekend were gone, but it was kind of difficult to mess up peeling a potato.

"Hi," Yeul said softly, wandering over to him after looking up from the recipes and realizing that while Evan generally struck her as a quiet sort of person, the quiet was a bit different today. "Having fun?"

Because peeling potatoes was always a blast, right?

"Peeling potatoes?" Evan didn't quite look up, even if he put a smile on for Yeul to see. Those were clearly some very fascinating potatoes. "It's probably not very high on the list of most fun things I've done around here, but it's productive, right? So that's okay."

"I have never put that much stock in productivity," Yeul admitted, which was the truth. But then, her days back home consisted of aimless travel and whims.

"Are you all right, Evan?"

Like Yeul, Zhahar had noticed that Evan was a little quieter today than normal. "Hi," she said softly, reaching out to put a hand on his shoulder. "Got a plan in mind for those potatoes you're peeling?"

"Um..." Evan blinked down at the potato in his hand, and then looked up at Zhahar with a tiny attempt at a smile. "Not really, no. But there are usually potatoes of some sort at a Thanksgiving meal, so I thought..."

He thought...

"... That is an awful lot of potatoes, now that you mention it."

"With butter and heavy cream, we can make a lot of mashed potatoes," Zhahar suggested. "And maybe some shepherd's pie? The mashed potatoes make an excellent pretend-crust. And fried potato slices make for a great meal, too."

Zhari didn't really want to talk potatoes but it seemed a better starting point than, 'What's wrong?'

Yeul wasn't a bad cook, exactly, but she was well aware that what she was used to cooking was... not what was common fare around here.

As such she would be spending a good bit of time studying the recipes intently before deciding on what to try her hand at. She wanted to help. She didn't want to ruin anything though.

"Hi Yeul," Zhahar said, mixing bowl in hand. She offered Yeul a friendly smile, though she soon had to drop her attention back to the bowl. "Spoiled for choice?"

"Zhari! Hello!" She smiled back. "There are so many options I must confess that 'spoiled for choice' is the best way to describe it."

Yeul's smile went a bit rueful. "Or perhaps I am simply indecisive?"

Priestly himself was around as well -- he really was a little neurotic about his kitchen, yes -- keeping an eye out for anyone who looked extra lost, or likely to set the wrong things on fire.

"I understand this is your restaurant?" Zhahar asked, giving Priestly a smile. Huh. He looked familiar to her, but she couldn't place where she might have seen him before. She felt that she surely would have remembered someone as brightly colored as he was. "Thank you for letting us borrow it."

Zhahar recognized the hair before she recognized the name or the girl it belonged to. She had met Sholeh in the scary other world, she'd been one of the few students that remained out from Umbridge's spell but not part of the Resistance, either.

"Hello," she said, giving the other girl a friendly nod. "You look like you're having some difficulty here. Everything look too good to chose?"

Rapunzel spun, a wide grin on her face. "It does!" Her smile got a bit shyer. "And I don't think I can actually make all of it." Even if she wanted to.

Her head cocked to one side. She didn't recognize this girl. "Are you new?" Rapunzel loved meeting new people!

Explore the Freezer

Don't forget to grab a parka once you're inside! The place is huge (the narration isn't kidding about the tram). It's like a frozen food wonderland in there. There's a large map on the inside of the door, and Karla's made sure a few scaled-down copies are available to take on a trek with you.

After her attempts to help in the kitchen had sternly been rebuffed (multiple times), Karla had decided to help out by running errands in the freezer. She tugged on her cold-weather gear, grabbed a map and merry trundled about, looking for any ingredients people asked for.

I actually forgot that today was my Remicaid day, so I will be offline for some chunk of the day. lovemykilt will have her usual workday availability, so she may be off and on all day.
