Caritas, Friday Evening

Truth be told, Mike had kind of enjoyed his Thanksgiving alone more than he may have anticipated to. He hadn't had a large fancy meal or anything, and he'd spent most of his time going around the house fixing small things that needed fixing, but still. It had been nice to have some space to himself for the first time since moving here. He hadn't ever thought of himself as someone who needed quiet time with himself, but apparently that happened sometimes.

It was still nice to be out of the house this evening. Even Tino seemed to not mind him that much this week, although apparently he was suffering through the after effects of eating too much yesterday and an unsuccessful Black Friday shopping trip today.

Mike still didn't manage to coax any war stories out of him.

With its two bartenders, although one of them may not be particularly helpful right now.

"Beer me," said Cade like the classy guy he was.

"Okay," Mike replied, not one to argue with a customer. Even if serving students was still a little weird. He dutifully got Cade a beer and slid it over the bar to him. "There you go, sir. Rough day at sales?"

That was a joke.

Cade snickered. "Helped a friend get a celebratory tattoo. Does that count for a Black Friday discount?"

He'd watched enough television this week to figure out the reference.

"Sure," Mike decided with a friendly chuckle. "I mean, as long as it wasn't a completely embarrassing tattoo or anything."

"Nothing with hearts, butterflies or my name being misspelled," Cade assured him.

"Okay, then I can get behind that," Mike decided. Like his standards were actually that high or something. "And I don't have to kick you out for endorsing poor life decisions. Good on you, man."

"Isn't a bar where most poor life decisions begin?" Cade asked, taking a swig from his beer.

"Dunno, man," Mike shrugged as he went to straighten up some of the rows of glasses. "I've made some decent life decisions in bars. But then of course I'm also working at one, so I probably shouldn't be slamming the concept anyway."

"How long have you worked here?" Cade asked.

"'Bout a month," Mike said. "Sometimes it feels like longer, but that's probably less the job and more the island."

"This place is karking insane," Cade said vehemently.

Mike chuckled. "See, I don't even know what that one word means, but I can still agree with the sentiment. It's –– this island definitely takes a little getting used to. You been here long?"

"Since the school year started," Cade replied. "It's been an experience, and part of the reason why I know where the bar is."

"Yeah, I can see how that works." Because the island was insane. "You're still here, though."

"Well, you know," Cade said with a little shrug, "home kind of karking sucks. Plus my uncle dumped me here."

Mike gave that a sympathetic nod, though he really wasn't going to go into why.

"Well, probably could be worse, right? I mean, the place is insane, sure, but I'm yet to see anything, like, dangerous."

"Me either," Cade replied. "Makes for a nice change--I might have changed into a girl, but no one shot's at me in months..."

"Uh, is that something you're used to?"

Bless him, he didn't actually stumble much over asking that.

"E chuta, no," Cade said, "though the two-breasts, no-waiting thing was kind of interesting for a day."

Thank you, Cade.

Mike gave that a good-natured laugh, although... "I actually meant the getting shot at."

"Oh, that," Cade said. "Kind of, yeah."

Yeah, Mike was kind of guessing at that right now.

"Almost makes Fandom sound like a holiday. Although, a completely crazy one."

"Well, I have to go to classes, but it's in things like hand-to-hand combat and conning people," Cade said, "so that's not so bad."

"Seriously, they teach you that stuff at school?" Mike asked, raising an eyebrow. Well, it wasn't like he'd had any reason to get acquainted with the class schedule, and Stiles hadn't been talking about it. "Man, high school's changed since I was a student."

Yeah, he knew it was a whole different kind of school.

"I've never gone to school before--back home it's mostly one-on-one apprenticeships," Cade replied.

"And where exactly is 'back home' then, if you don't mind me asking?"

A beat.

"I've helped a pony throw a party, I promise not to freak out if it's somewhere weird to me."

"Different galaxy," Cade said. "It's far far away."

"Okay." Okay, that was still a little weird. But he wasn't freaking out or anything. "So... How's that workin' for you?"

"It's a little strange," Cade replied. "No one here knows how to fly starships."

I am so glad this week is over.
