Caritas, Friday Evening

There were a few Christmas trees behind the bar. Afer yesterday, Mike couldn't say he was surprised. He was just doing his best to walk around them as he checked up on stock and got himself a drink to very slowly sip on. It just felt like the night for that.

He'd requested the band to play upbeat music, and they were doing their best, even though a Christmas tree had sprouted right where their drummer was supposed to be seated.

Mike had to admit it was actually pretty amusing.

"I don't know if this is better or worse than yesterday," Laurie greeted him, a few pine needles stuck in her hair. She'd had to wade through a few on her way out the door of her apartment.

[GOD SELF LET'S POST IN THE RIGHT SPOT]

Mike chuckled. "Well, they're not talking," he pointed out. "That's gotta be an improvement. It is in my book, anyway."

"Yeah, but they're like, everywhere," Laurie noted. "Like I'm a little worried that one's going to spring up under me right now."

She paused, for dramatic effect. No trees sprang up, but wouldn't it have been awesome if one had?

"That's yet to happen to me," Mike shared, and it was something he was pretty glad about. "I've had a few close calls, though. Pretty sure one scraped my side earlier."

"Oh no," Laurie said, very sad. "Do you need, like, a band-aid or something? I could look at it."

SHE WAS A GIVER. GIVER, RIGHT HERE.

Uh huh, suuure she was.

But Mike was game, so. He smirked, pulling his shirt up some to reveal a part of his stomach and side. And, you know, abs and stuff. You were welcome, Laurie. And yeah, there actually were a few scrapes there, though they were tiny.

"Think I can do without a band-aid?"

"I dunno." Laurie had to lean across the bar to see better, obviously. "That looks pretty serious, Mike. You might need to disinfect it or something."

She had no idea. But now she could see the abs better, yes.

"Really?"

He didn't think she meant really. He rolled his shirt up a little higher and looked down at the offending scratches, anyway. "Guess that counts as a Fandom war wound, right there."

Laurie was gonna go ahead and reach out to touch the scrapes, because you know, personal space was for other people. "You might even get a scar, Mike. Tragic."

Mike was used to people invading his personal space. Hell, he'd practically made a career out of it for six years. So, he didn't move or anything, just smirked slightly at her.

"Yeah, but don't some people dig scars?"

"I mean, it depends on the scar," Laurie said very seriously. "I'm not sure 'pine tree got me' makes the best scar story, you know?"

"I could lie?"

He was very good at spinning the truth in his favor when he needed to.

"I mean, I do enough of it about various Fandom crap as it is."

"But I'd know the truth," Laurie tsked, reaching out to trace the scrapes again because he wasn't stopping her, la. "It's okay, I won't sell you out. We can tell people you were attacked by a wildebeest or something."

Laurie wasn't totally sure what a wildebeest was, no.

"You know, for Fandom, I'm pretty sure that'd actually fly as an excuse." The island had teal deer. Who knew what other wildlife lurked about? "Thanks, I'm not sure my pride could handle the hit otherwise."

"Hey, that's what I'm here for," Laurie assured him. "I'll tell people all about that damn wildebeest. Or whatever. We could pick something more badass."

Mike chuckled. "What, like a grizzly bear? A mountain lion? 'Cause it's kind of a small scratch for that."

"Yeah, but just think of how bad that bear looks," Laurie said with a nod. "You showed him. Hypothetically."

"Do I look like someone who wrestles bears? Be honest, now."

No, he just lived with werewolves.

"You're right," Laurie said, shaking her head. "We're Floridians. Let's make it a gator. More believable."

Mike nodded approvingly. "Now you're talking," he said. "Way more likely. Kind of home sickness inducing, but way more likely."

"I haven't seen an alligator since I was like, in high school, but yeah," Laurie said a little wistfully. "But yeah! Maybe you fought an alligator. Very badass."

"Yeah, I haven't actually been hanging out with gators much either, but it's still a great excuse for the scratch," he said. "I'm more homesick for the weather, anyway."
