Caritas, Friday Evening

Okay, Mike's week had been all Ikea and house stuff, and he was pretty glad to be at work. Making things all the better, Tino wasn't even there to glare at him for crazy reasons. The zombies were playing classic rock and even without drums (Mike sure as hell wasn't going to be strapping any arms back on to anyone) it was still pretty great.

He put his message of the night on the specials board, then got to making sure everything was fully stocked.

Where your bartender was having an okay night.

"What kind of a funny story?" Laurie asked, sidling up to the bar. "Because I have plenty. If I tell four, can I get a free drink?"

"Maybe," Mike mused. "But they would have to be really funny stories. This joint doesn't run on stories, after all. Gotta usually get something out of the customers."

"One time I stole a motorcycle," Laurie told him, holding up a finger. "It was from a guy who told me he had a girlfriend after the fact. He has yet to catch on, it was four years ago, and I sold the bike to my friend Andy last year."

Maybe it wasn't so much 'funny' as 'mildly concerning.'

Mike laughed. But. "I don't know, Laurie. That's... I don't know what, but I actually feel a little worried for some vehicles now."

"Unless you're married or something and planning to break the news while I'm still in your bed, you should be fine," Laurie said with a wide smile.

"Do I look like I could be married?"

Almost sincere question, there, amused though he may have been.

"You could," Laurie said, leaning back a bit to survey him. "I mean, there's definitely a 'why the hell are you still single' thing with you. You're super-cute and sweet. You could be someone's husband."

You know what? Mike had actually thought that too. For a while, when it looked like things might work out with Brooke.

But maybe in another life.

He chuckled, reaching for a glass. Time to get himself a beer. "Thanks, that's sweet. I'm not sure it's accurate, but it's sweet."

"So why the hell are you single?" Laurie asked, because she had no tact, ever. "What's wrong with you?"

That earned her an amused glance that was only mock offended. "Nothing, as far as I can tell," he said. "But thanks for the concern."

"Hey, I'm in a position to be concerned about these things," Laurie told him, leaning her chin in her hand. "No point in investing my time in asking you out if you have some flaw I don't know about, right?"

There was a question in there, somewhere. Laurie had kind of glossed over it.

"Oh come on, like people tell people who are asking them out all about their flaws in advance."

And here, let him dig that question out for you, Laurie.

"Are you asking me out?"

"Would you say yes if I was?" Laurie countered. "'Cause if you'd say no then, no, I wasn't."

Tricksy. That was about as clever as Laurie was capable of being. Let's all relish it.

It wasn't that tricksy, but Mike was willing to pretend it was because it was kind of cute.

"Why would I say no, Laurie?"

And that got a bright smile out of her. "I don't know. Maybe that's your flaw: you say no to hot girls who ask you out."

"That is definitely not a flaw I have," Mike assured her. "Not that there have been any hot girls asking me out lately apart from you. But you definitely make up for that."

"Their loss," Laurie decided. "So does that mean that on one of your nights off I can drag you away to get into trouble with me? We can find all kinds of vodka to try."

Pause.

"Or, like, dinner or something."

"Maybe dinner," he replied, though amused. "All my respect and love to vodka but sometimes I'm cool with just enjoying people sober." More or less. "Okay, wine with dinner doesn't count."

"I'm kind of outgrowing the let's-get-tanked-and-find-our-clothes-later style of dating, anyway," Laurie admitted thoughtfully. "I think twenty-eight's probably too told to keep that as a life philosophy."

Or so she had been told.

Mike shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not. I don't have a lot of room to talk." He was thirty, and he'd barely stopped doing that yet. "And I'm not opposed to having to look for my clothes later, but I guess I could be getting classier in my old age."

"Right? We can be classy," Laurie declared. "It'll be a nice change."

Oh, Laurie.

Mike chuckled. "So when do you want us to be classy together? This shift right here is pretty much all I got going for me in terms of a fixed schedule."

Laurie thought for a moment, biting her lower lip. "Wednesday?" she suggested. "I know it's weirdly in the middle of the week and all, but I don't have anything going on that night."

Plus, his housemate worked that night. If that ended up being a thing that needed to be considered.

She was just saying.

Mike wasn't so sure taking a girl back to the house 8at least for anything fun) would go over well, even on Derek's work night. But he wasn't really thinking about that right now.

He smiled. "Hey, I used to work evenings all through the weekend, I am well-versed in the area of mid-week dating. Wednesday is totally fine. You have any preference on the food? I haven't been to any of the restaurants on the island."

Or on the mainland, either.

"Then I vote for adventure," Laurie decided. "'Cause yeah, I've hit the bars but none of the restaurants, really. So we should get something random and surprising and exciting."

"Random, surprising, and exciting it will be," Mike promised her. "Maybe I'll even try to dig through my closet for classy clothes."

I have new shoes, I'm so happy.
