Caritas, Friday Evening

Mike was realizing just how much the island revolved around the school from how quiet the town had been this past week. He'd even considered a trip back to Florida before abandoning the idea again. A small town felt even smaller when it seemed like at least a third of the usual population was gone, but he'd decided to embrace it. He'd taken a lot of long walks around the island.

It had been okay for a change but he was still pretty glad that it was Friday already. He was starting to feel pretty ready for everyone to come back.

The zombie band was on a Bee Gees kick and Mike was behing the bar, ready to get drinks for whoever happened to actually be around.

Where Mike's whistling along to Stayin' Alive.

"Are you aware that whether you're a brother and whether you're a mother, you're staying alive?" Laurie intoned in greeting as she sidled up to the bar. She tipped her head towards the zombies. "Little ironic, isn't it?"

She knew what that word meant, thank you. (And yes, it was sort of due to Alanis, but still.)

"A little," Mike admitted with a chuckle. No, he hadn't even thought about that. Just went to show how well he'd adapted to Fandom. "Hey, Laurie."

"Hey yourself," she said, smiling at him. "You didn't find a way to tag along on the trip either, huh?"

"Well, that would've required hassling Derek to make him go in the first place," he shrugged. "And then getting stuck with his fun-hating ass all trip, probably. So it didn't seem worth the trouble."

"That would seriously cut into my tanning time," Laurie mused. "We could've probably stowed away, though!"

Good plan, Laurie.

Chuckle. "I don't know, that sounds like too much work, too. It'd be easier to just go somewhere warm on our own."

Laurie cocked her head in interest, grinning at him. "And where would you have us go?" she wondered. "I mean, I think Florida's safely out in the name of having been there and done that."

[ugh, sorry, my taxes took three hours yesterday so I lost most of my playtime. and then I had to get drunk. moral imperative when your taxes take THREE HOURS.]

"Have you been to all of Florida?" Mike asked, jokingly. "'Cause I sure as hell haven't. But I don't know, yeah, maybe somewhere more exotic. Hawaii?"

"I've never been to Hawaii," Laurie mused, "and I haven't seen all of Florida, though I have at least been to your neck of the woods already. Oh, Tampa."

Said with all the fondness of someone who'd blacked out there multiple times.

"I almost went back to dear ol' Tampa just this week," Mike shared. Because he had. "To take a break from quiet small town life. But it would've been too much of a hassle with grabbing a place to stay on short notice and all."

Meaning he hadn't wanted to bother Brooke, pretty much.

"You couldn't couch-surf?" Laurie asked sadly. She was pretty sure that if she showed up on Jules' doorstep looking sad, she'd be able to stay as long as she wanted.

Or at least until she drove her crazy. So...like, a day.

Mike shrugged. "Most people I used to hang with have kinda vacated Tampa, so... It's really just Brooke and she works long hours, I'm sure she wants kind of an earlier warning before I come over to bum 'round her house."

Laurie was sooooo not going to ask about this Brooke person, and instead just assume she was ugly and possibly also not interested in men.

Because that was the mature approach to things.

"You didn't want to go visit people in Miami or whatever?" she wondered.

"I dunno, I guess I'm saving that for the right time." He wasn't sure how thrilled Dallas would be to see him, for one. "Adam's been whining at me to go there, but that's mostly when he's been drunk or high or some shit, so I don't know how serious he is."

"Maybe Adam should come here," Laurie said, totally unwisely. "...I would pay to see Derek's reaction to a guy like that, actually."

Mike made an amused sound in protest before managing to stop himself.

"Ohh, no. I –– that's not a good idea at all. Adam is... Adam. He's not coming here."

"I bet I could keep up with him," Laurie protested. "And really, what kind of trouble could he get into here?"

Oh, Laurie.

"I honestly don't even want to know." Kid cost him his savings, last time around. He wasn't taking responsibility for a disaster like that again. "He's trouble. And this is coming from me."

"That is impressive," Laurie admitted reluctantly, wincing. "He's little, though, right? How does a kid get into that much trouble?"

"He's nineteen," Mike nodded. He suspected he would have already heard about it if there'd been a birthday since he moved. "Also, getting into trouble's really not that hard, and I think... I hink Adam's got a lot of self-sabotaging going on. Used to, anyway. Hell, first time I met him he got fired on the same day."

"Oh, but we've all gotten fired from stuff," Laurie said, waving a hand. "I got fired on my first day of waiting tables because I got sassy back at some lady who wanted her fries without salt. Like, what is wrong with people like that?"

"Once is fine." He'd gotten fired on his first day at some point, too. Pre-stripper days. "Repeatedly? Then you got a problem. And Adam had a history of doing that, he even screwed himself out of a football scholarship on his first day."
