Caritas, Friday Evening

The topic of the evening at Caritas tonight was jelly shots. Yes, still. That was kind of a necessity when there was going to be a party devoted to the subject in about a week or so. So Mike was spending his evening trying to get opinions out of Tino. Not because he actually wanted them but because it was fun, because Tino seemed to view it as a nuisance.

Seriously, that guy needed to lighten up.

Where you have a choice of two bartenders. Only one is likely to talk to you about jelly.

Stiles wasn't a master of shots, but he wouldn't mind talking about jelly. It was delicious even without booze. "Hey man, how's it going?"

Mike nodded towards Tino. "This sourfaced fucker hates fun. Other than that, everything's fine, man."

Another glance, and he added, "Your hair's gotten long."

"The island is apparently a hairstylist in its spare time," Stiles said, pulling his fingers through his hair. "Why does Tino hate fun?"

"I don't even know. He has something against jelly shots."

That just made no sense.

"That's ridiculous, how could you be against those?" Stiles asked. "They're desserts that can get you drunk!"

Mike gestured vaguely at Tino. "Exactly! Well, obviously, he's not coming to the party."

Tino did not seem to mind this.

"There's going to be a party?" he asked.

"Next Saturday," Mike nodded. "With jelly shots. Kitty's never had any."

That was not the reasoning for the party, honest.

"How has Kitty never had them?" he asked. "I'm sixteen and I've had them before."

Lydia Martin knew how to throw a party, okay?

Even without poisoning everyone with hallucinogenics?

"She cites an unusual teenage," he shrugged. "I'm gonna try making her make up for it."

"Am I invited to this party?" he asked. "You're not gonna cockblock me from alcohol like Derek tries to, right?"

"I... am going to pretend I don't see you consuming any shots." Mike had let Adam have half a cup of G because he hadn't been legal to drink yet. Mike's hold on being a responsible grown up wasn't great in this respect. "But sure, you can come."

"Excellent. Good thing 'cause I've been hanging out there on Saturdays lately anyway." That's when Syfy played all the bad movies. "If it makes you feel better I'm like two weeks from seventeen? Which is close to eighteen?"

"Yeah, I think mostly I'll pretend I thought you were way older." Even though this was going to get reported on the radio, most likely. "Congrats in advance for seventeen, though. Better than my approaching birthday."

"Are you gonna be thirty?" Most people were scared of thirty.

"Thirty one, actually."

He wasn't scared, though. Just mildly annoyed at years passing.

"You don't look that old!" That was a compliment!

"... Thank you? I guess."

He looked amused, though.

"You're welcome!" he said cheerfully. "April is the best birthday month, true facts."

Mike shrugged. "It's treated me okay. So far, anyway." Actually, he'd had some pretty horrendous birthdays in the past, but that was a whole bunch of years ago. "Anyway, my birthday's pretty late in the month so I haven't been thinking about it much yet."

"I'm pretty excited about seventeen." Of course he was, he wasn't old yet. "Even though my dad says I shouldn't be 'cause I'm one year closer to being tried as an adult."

"He's like a sheriff or something, and not using you to commit crimes?" Mike checked. He was pretty sure about the sheriff thing. Pretty sure. "I think seventeen was okay. Thirty's not bad, either, though. I'm not crying myself to sleep or anything."

"Oh no, my dad's one of those good sheriffs. He's just had to arrest me before," Stiles said. "I'm not too scared of thirty--I just hope I kind of look like less of a spaz by then."

"I don't think you look that much like a spaz right now."

Whether he acted like that was a different matter.

"That's nice of you to say," he said. "Maybe spaz isn't the right word. Lanky and untoned are probably more accurate."

"Also you've got the hair now," Mike pointed out. "I'm sure that should score you some points."

"It kind of already has," Stiles admitted. "I mean, a girl was touching it a few days ago, so I think that might've been points scored."

Mike raised his eyebrows. "See? Definitely points scored. Although with girls touching your hair that's probably not all you should be scoring."

"What?" Stiles understood what Mike meant. He just thought the idea of it was ridiculous and beyond his reach.

Mike laughed. In a friendly, non-mocking way! "What? It's not that outlandish an idea, Stiles!"

"It kinda is, dude," he said. "Stuff like that doesn't happen to me."

"You had someone touching your hair!"

Mike was an optimist. And had been pretty charming his entire life, so maybe he was not the best judge of things.

"It's all just one little step after another, man."

"Says you!" Mike had the body of a Greek god, of course it'd be easy for him. "I'm lucky I managed the hair petting step without fainting."

"Still, dude, it's a step. You're young. You'll learn." A beat. "You didn't faint, clearly that's a positive thing to focus on."

"Well I like to focus on the positives," he said. "I do hope the long hair doesn't attract weirdos petting me though."

"Oh, well, this is Fandom," Mike pointed out. "So you might beout of luck there."

I'm watching football, what is this madness?
