It was Bay's first shift at the diner -- not that the guys in the kitchen seemed inclined to interrupt what looked like a very elaborate experiment with cherry tomatoes to do more than nod a greeting, let alone fuss over her. She halfway expected some kind of hazing to make up for it later, but it didn't seem to be coming.

Huh.

She wrote the specials on the sign, decorated it with a little cartoon of aliens, and settled behind the counter to wait for customers.

Specials today:
Olive cheese bread
Italian antipasto salad

Well, as long as she knew Priestly and Dean weren't the same person with different make up, she was golden.

"To the island or to the diner?" Bay asked, frowning at him. She could tell he wasn't Priestly, but the resemblance was still disorienting. Maybe Priestly had a twin? "No to the first thing, yes to the second one. I'm Bay."

Excuse you, he was way prettier. Than his nearly identical twin. Deal with it.

"Dean," he replied, making his way over to check for something breakfasty. Maybe deep fried too. His arteries, how they hated him. "So, now my coworkers are a teenage girl and my clone. That isn't sad at all."

"Sorry for not thrilling you on sight," Bay sassed in return. "So you're Priestly's ... please tell me you mean twin and not, like, grown-in-a-lab clone."

"Yeah, I wouldn't put it past this place," Dean replied, settling on coffee. Yes, he was acting like he owned the place. As you do.

It wasn't exactly an answer, but Bay decided she wasn't going to press the point. "No kidding," she said instead. "But today's already better than the last time I was in here. No fire-breathing veggies outside."

Dean lifted his coffee in a toast. "It's the little things that make life worth living."

"Got that right," Bay agreed, and leaned on a counter near him so she'd be a little closer as they spoke. (A little -- he was old and she wasn't Daphne.) "So, what's the deal with the guys in the kitchen? They kind of ... grunted when I came in. Do they not like new people?"

"They're like that with everyone," Dean replied. "Don't take any of their crap."

Dean's food was so getting spit in.

Okay, so after Anakin and Ben's class, Gert figured she was entitled to treat herself for lunch today. Because seriously. That class.

"Hey," she said as she claimed a seat at the counter, surprised. "Since when do you work here?"

"Since today," Bay answered, with a sheepish smile -- she'd meant to tell Gert this. "I figured I couldn't just keep asking my parents for stuff, so I went out to look for a job and this Priestly guy hired me. Have you met him? I think you'd like his hair."

"Spiky Mohawk Guy?" she checked. "I think I've seen him around. He seems like he'd be a cool boss."

"Mr. Spiky Mohawk," Bay confirmed. "And ... yeah, so far so good. His first interview question was whether Elvis is dead or alive."

This seemed to be a good thing, in Bay's mind.

"Y'kno, I didn't think to ask that?" Bay said, with a slight laugh. "I said he was like Santa. The body was dead, the spirit lives on, blah blah blah." She raised an eyebrow. "Is he alive where you're from?"

"Pretty sure no," Gert settled on. "It's probably more likely that Santa is, and is chilling with some other dudes who wear shiny costumes somewhere in the North Pole."

She did not really believe that, no.

"Wonder if I should get a job in town too," she mused.

"I think Priestly's still hiring," Bay said immediately. "We could be work buddies. That's a thing, right?"

"Sitcoms say it is," Gert said easily enough. "I don't know about the whole food service thing, though. Is it hard?"

"So far it's not," Bay answered. "The guys in the kitchen are kind of giving me the silent treatment, but that's not the worst thing in the world. Probably it gets harder when the place is busy."

"Yeah, I don't know about making fries for a lunch rush," Gert said, though she was sure to add, "My badassery tends more toward what I can do with a dinosaur than the 'dealing with rude people' variety. Maybe the clothes store? Then we can trade discounts, too."
