Luke's, Friday

It was the summer solstice, and it was absolutely gorgeous outside. Priestly spent the first part of the morning, when it was usually just the NPC regulars who didn't want pastries hitting up the diner for some nice eggy breakfasts, at a table set up right out front on the sidewalk, feet kicked up, soaking up the sun, and waiting for it to be a reasonable hour to call Zo on the west coast (earlier today than any other day, since he knew for a fact she'd be up before dawn just like he was, to catch sunrise). By 9:30 he was in the kitchen, setting the grill up to flame up nice and high (he was pretty sure even Fandom would frown on an actual bonfire in the kitchen, alas) and gathering together every fresh seasonal vegetable and fruit he could find.

The cook stayed out of his way. Less because he was respecting Priestly's little solstice celebration and more because he was convinced Priestly was going to burn his eyebrows off and wanted a good angle to record the action on his phone.

"Still running this place, which, eh. But also, I was a licensed nutritionist who volunteered to help out at a center for eating disorder treatment in Baltimore, and I helped Kenzi and Bo with their home for wayward kids on the island." Priestly smiled. "Considering last time, I was a celebrity chef who hated my empty life? Twenty years in Fandom looks pretty damn good in comparison."

"Yeah, not long after I graduated. Maybe six months before the multiverse got swallowed up by a mass of nothing, if you were around for that one."

"Yep. Got here just in time for that to happen, actually." She'd say she had the worst timing ever, but that award went to Sam Traynor. "I'd rather the possible future thing happen again than the disappearing multiverse."

Priestly answered on the first ring, then had the glory of trying to juggle the phone and his tongs as he tried to turn his chicken on the flaming grill.

Maybe not his best plan, but that was Dinah's ringtone. Dinah was not to be kept waiting.

"Won's taxidermy, you snuff 'em, we stuff 'em," he greeted.

"I've got some griffons that need posing," Dinah said, voice full of a grin. "You guys can do a fight scene so I can impress my friends, right? Also, one of those basilisk things."

"Basilisks cost extra," Priestly said absently, then blinked. "Okay, we're talking imaginary griffons and basilisks, right? Or is the opposing army using monsters against you all?"

"My basilisks are as real as your taxidermy skills," Dinah assured him with a snicker. "So far, nothing since the last ambush." Thank God. "Although we're getting a lot closer to the capital city, so. That might change... It's already been a week here since I talked to you! Also, Swift says hi. I'm bringing him with me next time I visit. What are you up to?"

"Hey, I could have taxidermy skills." No he couldn't. "And I'm all for no more action for you. In my head this is going to turn out like the Velvet Revolution in Prague, a nice orderly handing over of power with minimal bloodshed."

"The same way I have tattoo skills? If that's true, then you gotta let me do your next one." Dinah grinned. She really did need to call the Garden of Eden guys and see how they were doing. "I would be thrilled, thrilled with that, and so would most of our army, who between Momoko and Jono are on the verge of mutiny, if they weren't all so ready to take a nap." Okay, she exaggerated. But those two had really been hard on their people the last couple weeks.

"Jono I can see as a hardcore drill sergeant," Priestly said. "But Momo? I'd think she'd be bribing them with candy or something."

"The ambush really shook her up. She's chilled a bit since last weekend, but. She's in charge of running them through first aid drills, and she's teaching them kendo, and she's taking it mad seriously. I think she really, really doesn't want anyone else to die. Which, I totally get." She paused. "Hey, you haven't heard from Jaime since then, have you?"

"Maybe? Knowing him." Dinah made a face. "He and Momoko were married last weekend. I kind of want to poke him and sound him out about that... and also I want to be sure it was him, and not, you know, Future Momoko's Future Husband from El Paso, not our Jaime. Momoko hasn't said what they talked about afters. God, weird weekends are a pain."

I had this whole plan to go, like, hippie Earth mother on my outfit today with this adorable new open knit sleeveless sweater thing I got on ModCloth but ALAS. The AC at my office is always turned up to high, and my adorable sweater doesn't work well beneath the hoodies I burrow into for warmth.

Tomorrow, I will wear my day-after-solstice hippie Earth mother outfit and I will be awesome.
