Caritas, Thursday evening

Kenzi was flicking peanuts at Tino. Payback for the glitter a few weeks back. He was protesting, but every time he turned his back, he was getting hit with another peanut.

He finally gave up and fed the zombies instead of Kenzi doing it. He kind of looked like he wanted to feed her to them instead. But the zombies were smarter than that.

Slushy night! Because it's too warm for anything else.

Batman saw the remains of the peanut flicking when he walked into the bar. "Did I miss something?" he asked cautiously.

"Glitter-user." Kenzi pointed at Tino, who was industriously polishing a glass and trying to ignore her. "Revenge is miiiine. What's with the mask?"

It was very Goth.

"I'm Batman," Batman said, assuming that would explain everything as he took a seat at the bar.

It kinda did? Not that her world had a Batman. But if you were gonna go for the look, go all-out.

"Coolio. Whatcha drinking? I can make you Cade's Meltdown, or design a drink, or I think we have a couple Jell-O shots left."

...would that be harder for him to do with the mask on?

"Water," Batman said. "From the tap."

"Not the hose" Kenzi checked, voice very serious. Kind of like Batman.

"Don't mock," Batman warned, his eyes narrowing into a glare.

"Dude, never." Well. Nearly never. Certainly not right now, no. Kenzi poured him a glass of water and put ice in it without asking first. "But you can get water in home. Why come to a bar for it?"

"I like the atmosphere," Batman said.

Kenzi paused, looking over at the zombies, then shrugged, because hey, she worked here for that reason. And the free pretzels. And the Tino-torment. "Fair 'nough. Did I see your name on the teaching list, last time?"

"Good eye. I teach Advanced Survivalism," Batman said.

That actually got him some interest. "What, like in the wilderness? Because no offense, but you do not look dressed for that. I mean, I could be wrong..."

"That's introductory," Batman said. "My workshop has dealt with everything from plane crashes to shark attacks to gremlins.

"How do you fight a gremlin?" Kenzi asked, pouring herself a Diet Coke. "Aside from a face full of Lemon Pledge. That's the only thing I know about." And avoiding so-called gremlin repellant. Ahem.

"I find that knockout gas works best," Batman said. "But that was my first class and I wanted to see how the students dealt with it without any instructions."

"They mostly kicked."

"Tch. First mistake. Just hand them something to chew on, why don't you?" Kenzi slurped her drink, then said, "So I gotta ask, what do you do when you're not teaching?"

From the outfit, her first guess was lurk.

"Fight crime," Batman said. And then he sighed a very, very small sigh. "Around here? Lurk, mostly." GOOD GUESS.

Kenzi couldn't help the grin. Score! She just won five bucks from herself!

"Yeah, it is pretty low-crime. The odd bit of graffiti." Or art installation! "One or two rickshaw joyrides." Although she did give those back. "Pickpocketing. Nothing really worthy of somebody in a mask and cape and ... what kinda boots are those?"

"Custom-made," Batman said. "They're lightweight but heavy duty."

"They are sick," Kenzi said in admiration. "...but yeah. I mean, have you met the sheriff? He doesn't have what you'd call a high-stress job, most days."

"When I'm needed on the mainland, I make my way out there," Batman said. "But even that isn't what I'm used to. You just don't have real crime anywhere around here. Not like Gotham City. It's... nice."

"Summer vacation," Kenzi commented, nodding a little. "So Gotham City-- haven't run into that before. Lotsa crime?"

Oh, Kenzi.

"Let's just say that in terms of population and crime statistics, it's very different from Fandom," Batman said. "It's a city where the mobs ran almost every part of the town for decades. And once that started to change, the costumed villains moved in."

"Mobs, I get. Even Toronto's got some of those..." And hello to financial opportunities for her family! "But costumes? Why? Well, I mean, I get the use of a ski mask, but..."

"Criminals are superstitious and cowardly," Batman said. "By dressing like this, I can prey on those fears. The costume makes me loom larger, gives me a psychological advantage. It helps make criminals fear me."

"But then crime evolves. In order to challenge me, the best criminals use my methods. Then I fight back by being better than them."

OKay, Kenzi was trying to get her brain around this. "So you scared the crap out of some criminals, because.. they thought you were badass? Which you are," Kenzi added hastily. "And possibly crazy, with the ears and all. And -okay, so it became an intimidation-off?"

City College is on. Make a drinking game of it.
