The Streets of Fandom, Wednesday Afternoon
April and Cliff were out for their usual 'morning' (2 PM) walk when April's phone rang. That was weird, because people basically never called her. Even weirder, the ringing wasn't 'I Hate My Job,' the customized ringtone she had set up just for her boyfriends. Who else still used their phone as a phone?
She thought about letting it go to voicemail, but Cliff was doing some stuff on the ground anyway, and if April was on the phone then no one could give her a hard time for not cleaning it up as she walked. She put her phone to her ear. "What?"
The voice on the end sounded weirdly familiar, but not so familiar that April had the slightest clue who she was talking to. "Hi, is this April Ludgate?"
April's response was predictably hostile. "Who wants to know?"
"I'm going to take that as a yes," said the rather presumptuous person the other end of the line. April would have scoffed, but she didn't care that much. He was right, anyway. "Miss Ludgate, we've actually met before. I manage the pet store in town. Or, well, I did. We're making some business changes that were partially inspired by your suggestions the last time Fandom was... Fandom, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining our team."
"Seriously?" Now April really did crouch down to clean up after Cliff, because she kind of needed something else to fixate on at the moment. "Uh." She cleared her throat. "What kind of business changes?"
The guy told her. Apparently, although Everything But The Monkey had been run as a pet store for years now, they were transitioning to the nonprofit shelter model. To be more humane, and presumably also for the tax breaks. April tossed Cliff's plastic bag at the nearest trash can (and missed), straightening up and listening intently (which she never did).
They were asking her to work with animals that needed homes. Maybe ones that were injured in some way. And she would actually get to have a say in how the animals were treated and make sure the place took decent care of them. It was a no-brainer, really.
"Yeah, I'm interested," she said. "When do you want me to come in?"
