Fandom Post Office, Tuesday, September 3

The last time Éponine brought her cat in to work with her resulted in several magazines shredded beyond hope, and pieces of paper they were still finding under the counter and in corners today. Despite that she'd been considering doing it again, but Alouette had been particularly rambunctious this morning and Éponine would much rather she rampage around at home, where there weren't as many things to knock over and more space anyhow.

An electronics catalog had been returned as undeliverable this morning, and -- still a bit fixated on this new idea of taking online classes, or at least figuring out how the hell to use the computer to do so -- she was flipping through it, looking at prices on computers.

There was a lot of half-muttered swearing coming from her side of the counter, needless to say.

At some point Kitty was going to have to mail Allison's clothes back to her- yes, even the boots- so here she was, package in hand.

"Problems?" she asked.

"Oh, hello, Kitty," Éponine said, abandoning the catalog; it was only irritating her, anyway. "It's nothing, I was only looking anyhow. Oh! You've something to mail?"

[OOC: La la la guess who accidentally set their notifs as spam again . . .]

"Yeah, it's light, I promise," she said, setting the box on the counter. Knowing someone who worked at the post office meant she worried about sending things that felt like they were filled with dark matter or something.

Éponine appreciated that, at least when it came to having to carry packages to the back room.

"That's lucky for you, then, even if we --" with a little touch of pride as she picked up the package to put it on the scale, hefting it experimentally first -- "like it more when people spend more money. Besides, this way I won't look silly pushing it back there to be sorted."

She turned her attention to the computer, singing under her breath. "All right then, mademoiselle, how quickly d'you need this to get where it's going?"

"Overnight's fine," Kitty replied. "I've had this stuff long enough. See, you get my money that way."

"So we do," declared Éponine as she stuck all the necessary labels on the package, evidently having far too much fun doing that. "Well, that's ~~handwavey amount la~~ you'll be poorer. What's so important in there it's got to arrive tomorrow?"

Nobody had bothered to tell her not to be so nosy about other people's mail. She wouldn't have listened if they had, anyway.

"Just clothes, but I borrowed them a week ago and feel bad keeping them this long," Kitty admitted, getting her cash out to pay.

Éponine paused in the middle of sticking the final label on the package to stare at her in surprise. "All this just to return someone's clothes! That's awfully kind of you."

Personally, she'd keep them, but that was out of habit.

"I kind of got my clothes stolen there?" Kitty explained. "I was mad enough about it that I'd rather not continue the cycle." Because Jennifer was terrible and a good example of what not to be like.

Well, that had Éponine frowning, partly at the thought of clothes theft but mostly because she was trying to puzzle out the moral logistics of 'not continuing the cycle.'

"How's that work?" she asked bluntly. "D'you think it'll stop something like that from happening again?"

"No, but I don't want to annoy the person nice enough to lend me her clothes," Kitty shrugged. "And maybe next time I'll have earned the karma to keep my own stuff."

Éponine was still frowning; she wasn't entirely convinced it worked that way.

"You ought to," she decided with a firm nod. "Lord knows, you're nice enough to mail them all the way back to her, you deserve to keep your own. It's all a matter of whether someone with an eye on them agrees, though."

"Well... It was more like I had to switch clothes with someone and they made a break for it," Kitty admitted. "It was kind of an unfortunate situation."

And to be completely honest, Kitty was glad Jennifer hadn't worn them for the fight where she died. She wouldn't want those clothes back then anyway.

Those were not ideal circumstances for obtaining clothes, no, and luckily Éponine had never had to resort to them. (At least not as far as she knew. It was why she never asked Montparnasse where he'd gotten the shawl he gave her.)

"Switch clothes, hmm?" she asked, looking interested, though there was a tiny undercurrent of unease in her tone. "Playing a trick, or something else?"

"Technically, yeah. Trying to get away from someone who was after us," she said. "Just a little bait and switch."

Éponine nodded. "Did it work, at least? Even if you didn't get your own things back?"

"Yeah," she said slowly. "That was like the one thing that went right, actually. So that's something."

"God knows, sometimes it's lucky to have at least that much go right," Éponine muttered. "But you're back and all right, or you look it anyway, so it can't be all bad."

Who didn't love a good ramble? Especially when on a day that Kenzi would never have classes on again!

"So what's the weirdest thing being sent today?" Kenzi asked, before boosting herself up onto the counter.

"Nothing," Éponine answered, looking very put out by this. "Not even one funny-shaped parcel for me to wonder about."

Honestly, how rude of the mail to not entertain her.

"Though last week someone tried to mail the funniest looking black and white bird. It just waddled about and didn't look at all like it could fly, but we can't mail animals, you know. It isn't safe, but oh, how upset that woman was when I told her so!" She shook her head. "Then I asked her how she'd like it if someone tried to stuff her through a mail slot. She didn't like that very much, but really it was silly of her to try."

She'd come to the conclusion that occasionally being a smartass to the customers was fun within reason. (For an Éponine definition of 'within reason.') Gavroche would be proud.

"A penguin? Someone tried to mail a penguin. That is *awesome*." Kenzi snickered and tried to imagine why you'd mail one, jeez. "Maybe she stole it? And was mailing it to herself? Or maybe it was for her kid? That's still just wrong. The people on this Island, I swear."

"She wouldn't say," Éponine admitted. "Good lord, and didn't I try to get it out of her, too! Anyhow, she took it home again afterward. Grumbling the whole way, I'd guess, too. I felt sorry for it, the poor thing. It seemed like a nice bird."

"Awww. Maybe she can buy it a Portalocity ticket to somewhere. Although if it's not the Antarctic, I'm still gonna feel sorry for it." Kenzi grinned a little. "So I have a house. Home. Thing. You need to come by and see it. Since I've seen your place."

"And I will! Unless you'd rather I wait for a fancy invitation," Éponine teased. "Was the cat awfully upset about being somewhere new?"

"Naah, she's like a little zen cookie. She loves having a bigger space than my room to roam around in. And she's figured out how to get onto the roof. Bring Alouette, any time, it'll be cool. Although, we'll have furniture after the IKEA trip tomorrow, so, it'll be more impressive then." A bed! or a futon. Or a bed! Kenzi was excited.

"Even if isn't Efferton Manor. Doomhaus, my terrific ass."

"See if you don't regret that. Alouette won't stop running around all the space we've got," Éponine said with a sigh, but it was mostly indulgent, and only a tiny bit exasperated. "I'm half afraid I'll come home and find her leaping from the top of one thing to another. You'd think she never gets tired."

"Awww! That explains why she's not here," Kenzi guessed, giggling. She peered over at the catalogs, then gave Éponine a sly look."Or is there another reason?"

"Only that she was too clever to let me pick her up and let me take her along!" Éponine shook her head. "And I didn't fancy her tearing up half the paper lying about in here when I wasn't looking, the cunning little devil."

"Thaaat would be problematic," Kenzi conceded. As she started shooting rubber-bands across the room. "So, didja decide to get a computer? Or not?"

At that, Éponine glared at the catalog on the counter and flicked it with one finger. "Oh, yes, I'd decided on it, all right, only I don't have that kind of money."

Tempting to steal it, in the name of getting herself some kind of education, since that wouldn't be a bad goal, but . . . well, she wasn't sure.

"Betcha you can find a way to get to one. Or to find someone to loan you one." Kenzi was thinking, and pulled out her phone, typing in, 'where to get free computers'. "Oooor we could find some money. Somewhere."

Kenzi had fewer scruples, yiss.

Éponine, conflicted, turned a couple of pages in her catalog, not actually looking at any of its contents. "Don't suppose there's much point in hoping someone might throw one out."

Developing scruples was occasionally inconvenient.

"... and you would be wrong, my friend!" Kenzi said triumphantly, holding out her phone. (http://www.computerswithcauses.org/application.htm) "Think you can sound needy enough that they'll hand one over to you? If not, I'm all for liberating one from somewhere."

I need to go to this so badly, you don't even know. OH MY GOD.
