"Really?"

It had been shaping up to be just another one of those days at the Demon Marcus while Sparkle unpacked and put out new shipments around the store. And then he had gotten to the box of new hats.

"I mean, come on. There are zombies on the island. We don't want to advertise this, do we?"

The box of brain hats.

"Really?"

And yet, Sparkle didn't have the heart to leave them in the back next to the old burn barrel. He slapped a buy-one-get-one sign up next to the display, and then shrugged and got back to putting out new merchandise.

Heh. Brain hats.

Karina had been coming to heckle Sparkle anyway because... because she felt like it, that's why.

But the hats made her do a double-take.

"Those are terrible," Karina announced.

And if she had to explain what she was insulting then his taste in fashion was even worse.

"Oh my god aren't they? I had half a mind to burn them in the back the second I opened the box, but we've already sold two of them today, so apparently... they're a thing people like? Hell, I don't know. I figure if we can't sell more than that, I'll just donate a handful of them to the zombies at Caritas, and then the rest can go to a shelter on the mainland or something. Winter's coming, you know? And beggars can't really be choosers with what keeps their ears from like freezing off."

A pause.

"Hey."

"Hey back," she said, since he'd felt the need for greetings. "And good, I was hoping they weren't out because you'd liked"

Karina would have been ashamed to be your friend then, Sparkle. Ashamed.

"Wait... you sold two? Seriously?"

"Yeah, seriously. This guy came in and asked if they had one in green, and one in blue, and I don't know who the hell makes blue and green brains, but we did, so he took 'em."

Sparkle shook his head in bewilderment.

"I mean, there's no accounting for taste, I guess?"

"Except that his is awful," she pointed out. "We're accounting for that, right?"

Because Karina was judgy that way.

"Sure, but since he's been the only paying customer in here so far today, we'll let him keep his awful taste, or else I'm down one job," Sparkle replied, shrugging his shoulders. "A guy can't really try for a life after high school on working one day a week at a sex shop, and it's not like TAing pays anything."

"I could be a paying customer," Karina said, grinning at him. "You don't know that yet. Then it'd be okay to mock, since your job would be secure."

"Guess it could be," Sparkle laughed, shaking his head and grinning. "So, what can I interest you in today? We have brain hats on special..."

Now he was just being a brat.

That? That meant she was rolling her eyes.

"As if I'd buy that," she said, a bit snootily before shrugging. "But I could use a new pair of boots. Got anything that'd suit me?"

"Trust me, girl, if there's anywhere in town that'll have something to suit you, it'll be here. We have stuff that'd suit you if you were a ten-foot-fall three-headed guinea pig, I'm pretty sure."

That was not a stretch.

"You want 'em for winter, or just something to show off your legs with through the fall?"

"Show off my legs," she said, giving that a moment's pause and ignoring the rest of his comment because who wanted to think about a ten-foot-tall three-headed guinea pig? Who? "Really high heels are fine too. I'm not one of those who can't work them."

Karina did Heroing work in heels. She was a master at them.

Sparkle was no hero, but there was a pretty good chance that, given the opportunity, he'd be able to keep up.

"Of course you're not," Sparkle replied as he nodded his agreement. "Anyone who dresses like that knows how to wear heels. You want something to match what you've got on, then? I could probably find you something that goes with that cute hat you sometimes wear. The one with the triangles on it."

Sparks would so wear a hat like that, except it would do horrible things to his hair, and that just would not do.

"It is a cute hat," she said brightly. "I've got a dress that matches it, though it's not warm enough for the cooler months."

Well, okay, it was, but just because of her powers.

"If you can match it, though, I'll buy them."

Karina liked triangles.

"If? What is this if I'm hearing from you today? Always so negative, Karina," Sparkle teased, giving her a wicked grin before just hopping over the counter (what's the fun in going around) and making his way to the boots. "If anyone can find something to match that outfit, it's me, you know."

"I'll believe that when I see it," Karina said laughing as she followed him. "You haven't proven anything yet."

"Oh, I'll prove it," Sparkle decided, loftily. "It'll just take time. And, I mean, I don't think you're the sort to get bored trying on boots, right?"

Sparkle certainly wasn't. He could hand Karina new boots all afternoon.

... And secretly envy her ability to afford them.

Yeah, not that she was going to make a big deal of it but price was really not an issue for her.

"Only if they're really terrible boots," Karina said, just as loftily. "I have standards."

"Hey, not to worry, there. Usually, so does Demon Marcus. No brain boots, here."

Thank god.

"So, tall boots? Short ones? You want a heel on those, I know that already..."

"What would brain boots even look like?"

Karina paused and shook her head.

"I don't want to know," she decided. "Let's start with tall and work our way down."

"Tall it is, then," Sparkle chirped, and immediately grabbed a few pairs from the shelf. "So, now that we know you want tall, are you going to want something that shows off your toe, or not?"

Now he was just ~~stalling for time while the mun was at work~~ being a brat.

"Not," Karina said thoughtfully. "I don't really like the peep-toe look. Even the prettiest people look pinched in it."

"Fair enough," Sparkle laughed, throwing another two pairs of boots onto the pile. "What did you say your shoe size is, again?"

He held up another pair of boots, eyeing it critically, and then shook his head and stuck it back on the shelf.

"Six and a half," she said, watching him work and studying the pile curiously. "Or seven, if the shoe runs small."

"Here, then," Sparks replied, turning and shoving the whole pile her way. "Try some of these on."

He'd guessed well, okay? Sparkle had an eye for fashion. And apparently feet.

"Why ask if you already know?" she wondered, sorting through the boots to find a pair that caught her eye. "I'm also noticing no triangles yet. Are you just warming up?"

"Triangles are near the back," Sparkle sniffed. "We're getting there."

Look, maybe he just liked to play dressup.

"If you'd wanted me to stick around, you could have just said," Karina said, ignoring his words as she sat down to lace up a knee-high boot with a hefty heel.

"I mean, we don't have to do just shoes all afternoon."

"You don't like doing shoes?" That was a mock pout, right there. "Did you have anything else in mind, then? Something less shoey?"

Shoey? Not a word. Sparkle? Not inclined to care.
