Caritas, Monday evening

Kenzi had started decorating the bar some more. They already had zombies, so it was a matter of sugar-string cobwebs in a few strategic corners, candelabras (since Jonothon was being a stick-in-the-mud about the Boards), and a few rubber spiders and bats.

They were also fun for throwing at Tino, the whiner.

Is playing more Voltaire than usual.

"So what's the deal?" Mira asked as she took a seat at the bar. "Are these decorations, or is this place going downhill?"

She was from Space, where they didn't have Halloween.

Well, the Ewoks probably had Halloween. But Mira wouldn't know that.

"Thursday's Halloween. All Hallow's Even. Samhain." Kenzi looked far too gleeful. "Ghosties and goblins and things that go bump in the night are supposed to come out then. How ya been?" She grinned. "I see you survived Homecoming weekend."

Someone else who had heard Cecil's broadcast, yes.

"I barely have any idea what you're talking about," Mira said "But yes, I survived. It wasn't even that bad. Had a busy enough booth at the carnival, only wanted to smack one person at the dance. It went much better than I could have hoped."

Kenzi snickered. "Who was the smack-ee? I didn't get to all of the carnival, but I don't think I saw you at the pie-throwing booths. What's your poison tonight?"

"Atton Rand was the smack inspiration. I'm sure he gets that a lot," Mira said. "And I guess I'll have the After Dark, whatever that is. It sounds intriguing."

"It's good," Kenzi assured her, grinning as she pulled out the ingredients and a shaker. "And yeeeah, I bet he does. I remember him from the visit to the strip club."

They so needed to do that again.

"You guys visited a strip club?" Mira asked. "Any good stories from that trip?"

"Gert took a book," Kenzi said in mystified tones. Not judging, just... not getting it. "Cade had waaay too much fun, but nobody got arrested, at least, even though we were all underage." She grinned. "The looks on everyone's faces when we ended up there..."

Some people may have not known that's where they were headed. Heh. Kenzi slid the After Dark over to Mira, decorated with candy corn.

"Thanks. I'm guessing it wasn't exactly what people were expecting?" Mira said. "I mean, I'm not pretending to be a huge badass here. I've only been in a strip club once, and I was pretty intently looking around for my target, not exposed body parts."

"The number of clubs that would let a bunch of under-age kids in all at once aren't as many as you'd think," Kenzi agreed.

Really, no one had ever accused her of telling the bus driver where to go. Which meant there was no evidence of same.

"There's some good underage dance clubs in Baltimore that we could hit again... who were you looking for in the strip club?" she asked, curious.

"A pretty low-level mob guy," Mira said. "I usually prefer bigger fish in less sleazy ponds, but I paid my rent with that bounty, so I'm not gonna complain."

Kenzi toasted her with her soda, and said, "That place was pretty rank, to be honest. Although the girls who were dancing were nice. Got their cards in case I ever have to throw a bachelor-or-ette party." She sipped her drink, and added, "There's Halloween parties going on Thursday that could probably explain the whole thing better than I could."

"Oh, is that what those party signs were about?" Mira asked. "Is there anything I need to know before possibly going to it? Customs, or people to watch out for, or Fandom weird stuff that happens?"

"Most people are gonna dress up in costumes -- that just standard North American-- although I heard from somebody that sometimes Fandom turns you into your costume, so. Careful what you pick out," Kenzi ticked off on her fingers. "Saying 'trick or treat' should get you candy, and if not, egging their windows or TP'ing their lawn is fine. Annnd I dunno, I've heard lots of ghost stories around Halloween," Kenzi thought of Anna. "But no idea how true they are, you know? Especially around here."

"This sounds kind of insane, you know that, right?" Mira asked. "I'm not saying it's necessarily the bad kind of insane, though."

Kenzi shrugged good-naturedly. "It's mostly an excuse for little kids to go around begging for candy, and big kids to pig out on sweets and scare the crap out of each other now. There's all sorts of legends about how it got started, about the old year dying into winter." She shivered a little. "Some of those get creeeepy. But mostly it's the fun kind of nuts now."

"I'm probably not wearing a costume, though. If I'm going to turn into anything this Halloween, I want it to be myself," Mira said. "Which sounds weirder than it did in my head. I'm blaming the drink."

Shadier and more full of dark corners than usual. Also black lights.

Busy for the next hour or so, but around all the rest of tonight. I looooove Halloween.

Kenzi does too, just don't mention Baba Yaga.
