Caritas, Friday Evening

There was a watermelon on the bar tonight. Tino claimed he knew nothing about it or how it'd gotten there. Mike was actually willing to believe him. The island was like that, wasn't it? Random fruit in unexpected places, wasn't the first time it had happened and it wouldn't be the last, either.

Mike let the watermelon just sit there while he filled in the specials board.

There wasn't really a theme tonight, unless you counted the zombie band devoting their evening to covering songs by the Mamas and the Papas.

"There's a watermelon on the bar," Jess said helpfully.

"Yeah, there is," Mike agreed easily. "And before you ask, no, I have no idea why. I didn't bring it, and neither did Tino. Probably not the zombies, either. So we're just letting it hang."

As you do.

"I mean," Jess said, tilting her head to really consider it. "It's a good look for the place. Sets you apart from other bars."

"You think so? It doesn't clash with the zombies?"

You had to be so careful when decorating a place with zombies in it.

"Nah, it brings out their eyes," she said, and added, "Not literally, or anything."

Because zombies.

Gross. Although Mike still chuckled. "Yeah, I don't really want those like, popping out and rolling over to the bar or anything."

Even more gross.

"At the very least it's a tripping hazard," she added, but smiled. "So this is my grossest conversation in a while..."

"Well, you weren't at the game night where we all went to hell, a couple of weeks back." There had been some gross ones there! "I'm just making sure you're getting your share."

"That's so thoughtful. So this is like my postcard from hell?" she laughed.

Mike nodded solemnly. "It is. Just a little taste of hell."

"Well, I appreciate it. So how're you doing, aside from all the fire and brimstone?" she asked.

"Well aside from the fire and the brimstone, I'm good." As if he ever said anything else, though. "Working hard, building furniture, that kind of thing. You?"

"Oh, you know, educating the youth, making the house look less depressing. Also a lot of crocheting," she replied. "Furniture, huh? The IKEA kind?"

[Omg, post. We hit POST in this house.]

"Uh, no, not the IKEA kind," Mike replied slowly, with the kind of tolerant air of someone who was too nice to object too harshly to that totally wrong idea. "Custom furniture. Basically anti-IKEA."

"Oh, good!" Jess said, actually kind of relieved. "I know we have that IKEA like right there and all, but I still picked most of my furniture up from garage sales or whatever. At least it has character. And I don't have to feel like I need to try and pronounce umlauts."

"Yeah, those umlauts are pretty tricky," Mike agreed, with a chuckle. "Also, then your home doesn't look like you're living in an IKEA catalog."

"Which is a fine look for a home, as long as you don't mind anything not having any character." Of course that was a concern for Jess.

"Yeah, exactly!"

Shush, his home had been very important to him for as long as he'd had one of his own.

"I mean, I've known some really nice people with IKEA homes, but they still creep me out a little."

This is the first day this week that I don't have a headache.
