April happened to think that New Year's was about as stupid as holidays got, but it was a reason to down a bunch of beers and make Ben and Derek Skype her from The Bulge. She'd still wound up calling it a night early, and when she woke up in the new year, she didn't feel so lazy or hungover that she felt the need to take a day off.

Anyway, being at work today was probably a good idea strategically - she could take advantage of people's new year's resolutions. She powered on the desktop and typed up a sign.

be a better person this year and adopt an animal in need

It was a dick move, but she'd be shocked if it didn't get her any business.

"It's overrated," April said. "I'm still dating my dumb boyfriends even though I've lived here for like eighteen months. It's boring. I should just dump them."

//I think after this long without much contact, they'll understand,// Jono offered. //Long distance is difficult. Raven and I did it for a while, after I graduated.//

And she could teleport! It had worked out nicely enough until his life went straight to hell and took their relationship along with it.

"Yeah?" April hadn't heard much about Raven other than the fact that she and Jono had dated. "That why you guys broke up?"

Jono gave his head a little shake, bunching his shoulders up a little.

//No, that was... later. After I got th'face. She wanted to fix me, or... coddle me, or just make it better, and I was convinced that there was no such thing as better, and wasn't going to let myself become anybody's project.// Which was only a fraction of the whole story, but at least he was admitting that he'd been the one to turn her away? //I needed to put everything I had into keeping myself together. I couldn't focus on a relationship, as well.//

"Good thinking," April said, maybe a little unexpectedly. "Relationships are stupid. And people who try to act all sappy to fix your feelings are assholes. No one needs that."

A tiny bit unexpectedly, but Jono appreciated it all the same.

//I'm taking it better, this time,// he ventured. //I mean, the fire and all. It still sucks, obviously, but I'm not... not losing my mind, the way I was. And nobody's really been bent on fixing me, they're letting me pull myself together at my own pace. That helps.//

He was that person who needed to fight his own way back kicking and screaming, instead of accepting the hand offered to him. He trusted his own progress. It was one of the few things that were still his own.

"And if anyone tries coddling you, you can sing annoying pop songs in their heads really loudly," she noted. "Scare 'em off."

But in all seriousness, she thought she knew where Jono was coming from. She'd never been in quite the position that he was in now, but she knew she wouldn't take well to being babied. It wasn't hard to see why that would suck.

"Bet you're the first person who's ever said that while dressed all in leather," April mused.

//I'm probably the first person to say a lot of things while dressed in all leather,// Jono pointed out, faintly amused. //Comes with the whole 'trying to keep the fire in' territory, mostly.//

"You should invest in a motorcycle," April remarked. "Complete the look."

//You know, I've been considering it? I used to ride, but around here, there just hasn't been the opportunity.//

He had much better luck in alternate realities, where he could blow off the Ghost Rider's head, and then make off on the Hellbike, say.

//Might go for broke and just spoil myself with one. I want to think I deserve it, right about now.//

"I don't know about 'deserve,' but you might as well. It should make things suck less."

She shrugged one shoulder. "And you can take me for rides on it and I'll yell at the other drivers for you."

Jono was so going to stick with 'deserve,' here.

//... You know, that actually sounds like a good time?//

He was perfectly capable of doing his own yelling, but there was always that added complication of 'people from realities without powers don't like when you talk into their head.'

And yelling in their heads was maybe appreciated even less.

It sounded like a good time to April, too. That was why she looked ever so slightly pleased for once. "One request," she noted. "Don't get one of those helmets with flames or a dragon on the side. You're better than that."

//Ugh, no. I've got enough flames in my life, I don't need to advertise it,// Jono replied, wrinkling his nose. //My helmet will be black, just like everything else I'm wearing.//

Because there were just some colours that were decidedly Jono-friendly, and they were all black.

April had a surprisingly colorful wardrobe for such an... April-ish girl, but she saw the appeal of black. She saw it a lot.

"Black bike, too?" she wondered. "Without any weird patterns on it?"

//Black bike,// Jono agreed. //If it has weird patterns there, it'll only be because I can't find a Norton without something on it, and that's not bloody likely to happen.//

Yes, Jono had a motorcycle make of preference.

"Why Norton?" April didn't know a single thing about motorcycles, incidentally.

//My first bike was a Norton,// Jono replied with a shrug of his shoulders. And then, after a moment's pause, he decided to elaborate further. //It's a British make.//

He had a bias.

"Gotcha." It was a good enough reason. "Guess motorcycles are the only case where that doesn't mean you have to drive it on the wrong side."

//No steering wheel, no confusion,// Jono agreed, looking pleased. //No blind spot, either. Really, it's my kind of ride.//
