Let's be real here, Derek had been hiding for about a week. But this time he wasn't hiding in the woods! Which was... progress for him.

He was just at his fancy manager job, looking scruffier than usual and possibly a little crazy. It was the little dog that made him look crazy. Puppy Joe was terrible like that.

Yeah, who didn't want to rent the one apartment available from him?

So, an upset Stiles had talked to Kitty, and Kitty had complained to Clint. Now, Derek had a Clint at his doorway, looking smug. "So, word on the grapevine is that you're kind of a dick."

He could try to look less pleased about that but... no, no he couldn't.

"You'd be the expert there," Derek replied. Because this was only to be expected.

"I have my moments, but the difference here is that Kitty doesn't think I'm a jerk," Clint said. "Making Stiles upset was a really bad idea."

"So, you wanted me to lead him on?" Really, Clint. This is what happens when he's backed into a corner.

Clint sighed. "Okay, look. I heard about things from Kitty, who heard them from Stiles, so I'm going to momentarily give you the benefit of the doubt that some details were left out during the game of telephone. Why don't you tell me what happened so I can decide if I need to punch you or not?" That was kind of polite, right?

"Yeah. Because I want to chat with you," Derek replied slowly.

"Hey, you know I love chatting with you," Clint said sarcastically. "I'm not a fan of you and Stiles hanging out, but I'm also not a fan of Stiles being upset and Kitty being angry. I could send her here to get the details instead, and she's a lot more relentless than I am."

"Do whatever you want. I really don't care."

He had enough self loathing to keep Kitty at bay for years!

"Aww man, come on, I can't punch you if you want me to," Clint said. "Seriously, what did Stiles do?"

"Stiles didn't do anything. Leave him alone."

Yeah, you work on the whole 'I don't care about him' thing, Derek. Maybe take a few classes on repression.

"Relax, I'm not going to do anything to him. He's a good kid," Clint said. "Did you just feel weird being friends with a teenager? It's weird, I get that, but Stiles is a good one to pick, I'd think."

Derek stared at him for that.

"He'll find plenty of other friends." While Derek died alone like a sad sack. A bloo bloo bloo. "It's better for him that way."

"Wait," Clint said as the lightbulb went off in his head. "Are you seriously doing the 'Stiles can find better friends then me, so he should be friends with everyone but me' thing? 'Cause let me tell you, I am well versed in that move." Ah, the joys of self loathing.

"Great," Derek replied with a completely false grin. "Now you can leave me alone."

Clint rolled his eyes. "That move is a dick move. You know it and I know it." Even if he did also use it. "As much as I hate to say it in this instance, I think the people here who come from the same place need to stick together. Are you sure you can't just... I don't know, be civil with Stiles so he doesn't think you hate him?" That was the gist of how things went as far as Clint could understand.

"Why? Are there roaches?" James asked.

"No." Not that he actually cared about this place. Because it would probably be destroyed in a terrible fire if he did. "Most people want to."

Probably. He was a shitty manager.

Which was why he was just shoving the key for apartment # -4 at James. So.

Derek took that minute to sigh and look up at the ceiling like it would make things normal. Goddamn Fandom.

James skidded to a stop in front of the counter. "Something weird's with the kitchen, but whatever. I'm taking it."

"Great." Wasn't Zayne glad he left this place in Derek's hands? "Don't freak out your neighbors."
