The Perk | Wednesday Afternoon

As much as Stiles wanted to spend the rest of his life in his room aside from going to classes, he did acknowledge that after a few days the room could use some airing out. If only for Cade's sake. So he left the relative safety of his room and went down to the coffee shop for the biggest coffee they offered and to do some reading for his online classes. He was still under the assumption he'd live to get into college so he really needed to keep his grades up if he wanted a scholarship.

Huh. He should be hearing back from a few schools soon. For some reason that didn't make him as happy as he should have been.

History book propped up on the table so he could eat and read at the same time, Stiles was distracted enough that it was one of the rare moments lately that he felt almost like his old self. He even brushed off when the words jumbled on the page every once in a while, owing that to the fact that he had maybe gotten a total of six hours of sleep in the last three days.

Jim was trying to load his body up with caffeine to chase his hangover away so he ducked into the Perk. He didn't want to chance making his own coffee since it'd probably turn out like crap.

"Hey Stiles," he said once he'd warmed himself up enough to move. "Long time no see. Thought you'd disappeared or something."

"Just been busy." You know. Moping. Going crazy. Normal busy stuff. "I just spent a week at home too. California has better weather."

"Yeah, I'll bet," Jim scoffed. "It was raining clock parts or something here yesterday. Have a good Christmas?"

"Can't complain. It's not Christmas back home so it wasn't a big deal." He wasn't thinking about how he spent Christmas with Derek, nope. "How was yours?"

"Eh. Quiet," he said, shrugging and heading to the counter. "I went to Toronto for New Year's and froze my ass off. No idea why people like winter so much. You can't even show any skin without your nipples freezing off."

Which was such a terrible thing.

"Why Toronto?" Canada was boring, this was a fact.

"Because Natalie picked it and I followed like a puppy," he said, rolling his eyes. "But, I guess it was neutral ground. Not here and not where she lives and wouldn't have to deal with me giving her a bed reputation."

"How could you ever give someone a bad reputation?" Mmm sarcasm.

"You being sarcastic at me, Stiles?" Jim asked, waiting for his coffee to be prepared and passed his way. "I'm an angel."

By the time Kitty actually got around to getting up and getting out, the Perk had felt pretty necessary. And she was pretty glad to see Stiles there, too. "Hey there," she greeted him with a smile.

Stiles' responding smile didn't exactly reach his eyes but the smile was there. "Hey. How's it going?"

"Pretty okay," she said, making the universal gesture for 'get up, please' because someone was getting hugs and this wasn't up for debate.

"Well that's good." Somebody around here should be pretty okay. Stiles put his book down and got up from his seat, kind of knowing what was coming here.

And thus, there were hugs. Kitty figured he probably needed them.

"How're you doing?"

[robinonadderall]

"Not great," he admitted, hugging her back. "Seriously considered switching schools for a minute there before my dad reminded me I only have to stick it out for five more months."

"You can do it," she nodded. "Do you want to talk?"

She'd learned to ask rather than just assuming.

Stiles shrugged. "Not much to talk about, is there? Situation's still the same."

Considering the hour at which he'd been woken up by squirrels, coffee was definitely in order, and Clint was feeling lazy enough to make someone else prepare it for him. When he saw Stiles though, he stopped and gave him a little wave. "Hey, how's it going?" he asked. And no, he did not mean that in a small talk kind of way.

"I've been better," he said honestly. Come on, he knew he looked like hell and he also knew Kitty had talked to him. "Happy late birthday."

"Heh, thanks. It was a pretty good one," Clint said. "Do you need a refill on anything while I charm the barista?"

"I'm good, thanks," he said. "Caffeine isn't doing much for me anyway lately."

"Well that sucks," Clint said, quickly ordering his coffee and coming back. "Is there anything that is helping?"

"Not really," he said. "Apparently it takes time."

Apparently all those sappy movies had a point.

"Unless you're talking about the whole tree stump thing then, no, nothing's helping with that either."

"I was talking more about the tree stump thing, but I get that the other thing sucks too. I'm sorry Derek's a jerk," he said sincerely.

"I'm sorry too," he said. "But, yeah, the tree stump thing is still a mystery. A sucky mystery."
