The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

If Derek hadn't been paid to be here tonight, guess where he'd be. Not here. It wasn't actually a great joke, but it was all we have today.

He was there and pointedly ignoring the DJ playing angry break up music. Because the DJ was a dick.

Kitty hadn't been sure Derek would be here even if he was getting paid, and she was glad he was. Even if she didn't look forward to this conversation at all.

"Hey," she said, taking a seat.

"Not interested in whatever you're here to say." Oh yeah, you start out on the defensive.

"See, we could have started with hello. But if you're gonna start there, then I'm gonna start with a good old-fashioned 'What the hell were you thinking?'" And she really did want an answer.

"I'm pretty sure you already know," Derek replied with a glare. "Since you were there for things, weren't you?"

See, this was why she could never plan what she was going to say to him.

"...Excuse me?"

He was a surprise like that!

"What Stiles was keeping form me. You already knew."

Oh, this was going so well already. "And what is it I already knew?"

"About my pack." This time. Oh god, wait for the rest of it to come out.

"...I know it exists?" Kitty frowned, honestly confused where he was going with this. "Seriously, you're going to have to give me more if I'm gonna know why you're pissed at me."

Derek gritted his teeth for a moment before continuing. "That they're dead."

Kitty nodded just once. "I know one's not, but that's pretty much all the information I got, yes. Is that what brought this on?"

"The one that left," Derek sneered. Because anger was way better than crippling self loathing.

"In an alternate universe," Kitty said slowly.

"Go away, Kitty."

"Do you even know any of them?" she asked, clearly not going away.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because I'm trying to figure out whether you were an asshole to your best friend over people you don't even know."

"Do you know what it's like to lose pack?" Derek asked, leaning against the bar. "It's like having a limb ripped off and the pain never leaves. I know. I've had it happen twice now."

Because Beacon Hills was a hell hole!

"To be told that you tried despite that, but that pain won't end because you failed them again? Or are you just here to give me a pretty speech about friendship?"

"I'm too confused to give a speech right now," Kitty said honestly. "For the record, you're talking to someone who's had a scary amount of experience in losing everyone close to her, and I get that it messes you up in ways you never expected. But you haven't lost this pack. You don't even have them yet. There's no guarantee you even will."

"Then it's better that I don't get them," Derek shot back. "I don't have a pack, I don't have a family, and I don't have friends. Leave."

Still not leaving, nope.

"So, losing people gives you issues, okay. Totally understandable. But do you realize what a stupid way that is to live? And how selfish? You gutted someone who genuinely cares about you because what, you don't want to potentially lose more people someday?"

"Selfish?" Derek hissed. "Everyone I l--"

He took a breath.

"Everyone I care about dies. Don't talk to me about this being selfish. He's a child. He'll grow up and move on."

"He's not a child. You can't go through what he has and just be some kid," Kitty said. "You humiliated him and gave him some brand new issues at a time when he needs support. At the very least, stop acting like you did him a favor when you really did it because you're scared."

Excuse you, he was terrified. Not scared.

"He's a child who thinks a pretty face is enough to fall for someone and ignore how ugly it us underneath."

Derek. Derek, stop yelling at your past self. This was a problem.

Kitty was silent for a moment.

"Derek, I say this as a friend, and know that you're stuck with me no matter how mad I am or how many times you say you don't have friends," she said. "But your self-flagellation is bullshit. It's not true, and it's not helpful, and if you're not happy with yourself, you can change that. Maybe start by not being letting Stiles think there's something wrong with him when it's you you're busy hating."

Derek did the whole 'stoic glaring at a random spot in the room that wasn't Kitty' thing at that. Because Stiles wasn't the one with something wrong with him.

Well, other than the evil tree stump.

Figuring that silence at this point might actually be a good sign, Kitty softened her tone. "I know it's terrifying to put yourself out there. You go through enough, you start thinking it's easier to push people away. Except it's not actually easier. Sometimes you're going to get close to people, and yeah, sometimes they'll hurt you, or you'll hurt them, or something will happen to one of you. But if you spend all your time worrying about what might happen, you miss out on the good stuff you actually have."

"Are you done with your after school special?"

"I don't know. Are you getting the point?" she asked.

"I don't know. Maybe you should lecture me about opening my heart some more," Derek drawled. Because he was a bitch like that.

But he had things to think about at least.

"Oh, I totally could. Would it make you feel better to call it the 'don't be suck a jackass' lecture?" Kitty asked.

Derek rolled his eyes. "This isn't going to change anything. He would never leave me alone otherwise."

Kitty honestly had no idea how Clint hadn't punched him, but he might deserve another certificate for it.

"You know, this isn't a good thing you did. Even if you thought you were doing right by him somehow. Answer me seriously: do you feel good about any of this?"

"What does that matter?"

"It just does. Yes or no."

"I'm not answering you." Which meant it was a no. "Order something or get out."

"Taking that as a no. Fine, I'll go, mainly because as much as I love you I also really want to throttle you," Kitty admitted. "But I really need you to know that you haven't helped anyone with this, least of all yourself. Think about that, do something about it, and I'll see you later."

Hey, look! It was still there.

Still veeping. Vipping? Who knows.

Vamping, maybe? Eric was there in his spot, drinking a glass of something experimental from True Blood called CatJuice.

He wasn't a fan.

Derek, you are making me want to both hug and throttle you, you butt.
