When it came to romance, there were a lot of spots where Clint was pretty hopeless, but he at least knew how to do Valentine's Day.

When it didn't involve divorce papers, at least.

There had already been an exchange of roses (it never got less weird to receive flowers from Kitty, but Clint certainly wasn't going to complain), and now there was going to be a nice dinner where Clint had dressed up and no one was going to accidentally stab themselves with a chopstick. Hopefully.

"So, did anyone else send you flowers for being so awesome?" he asked.

Kitty, who'd even worn a dress (and tights, she was not crazy) in this weather so he better know she loved him, nodded. "The usual suspects," she said. "Plus teaching buddies. How about you?"

"I got a note from someone who I think wants to lick me?" Clint said uncertainly. "It was all those emoticons of someone sticking their tongue out so either someone wants to lick me or I'm gonna get eaten with the full moon and all."

"You're not going to get eaten. And I'm the only one allowed to lick you," Kitty told him.

"I don't know, the werewolf mafia might want to get me for stealing you away," Clint teased. "But I like the whole only licking from you part."

"Yeah, you'd better like that part," Kitty said, smiling. "Otherwise I need to work harder."

Why not start the flirting right off the bat, apparently.

Well that's what Valentine's Day was all about, right? "Not yet, we need food first. Protein and carbs for energy and all that. Then we can get to the licking," he said.

"Has anyone ever told you you're a romantic?" Kitty laughed.

"Oh yeah, I hear that all the time," Clint deadpanned. "Speaking of romantic, you know the guy is supposed to send his lady flowers, not the other way around, right?"

"Not in 2014," Kitty pointed out. "Do you not like getting flowers?"

"No, no. I mean, I do like it. It's nice," Clint said. "I've just--you're the only one who's ever done that. I didn't know if it was a modern girl thing or a you thing."

"Maybe a little bit of both? I figure it's the day to show the person you love how much you care, so why should you miss out on getting that?" Kitty said.

"'Cause there's dinner. And apparently licking," Clint said. "You can't say anything about me spoiling Lucky for a while because you spoil me too."

"I wouldn't dream of it. Especially since because you both deserve it," she smiled.

"Have you ever thought about getting a pet?" Clint asked. "Aside from half-taking care of Lucky, I mean."

"I've thought about it," Kitty shrugged. "I have Lockheed, though, and I feel like I'd have to make sure he was okay with it first. Why?"

"I was just wondering. I just think about stuff like that when I think about you. And I was in the pet store the other day, against my better judgement," Clint said, laughing.

"Uh oh. Does Lucky have a new little brother or sister now?" Kitty asked. Puppies were irresistible.

"No, I was good. Also, I think Natasha might glare at me if I came home with another surprise animal," Clint said. "Plus, I'm not even the best owner to Lucky sometimes, you know? That'd probably get worse if I got even more dogs to take care of."

"Oh, come on, you are awesome to Lucky," Kitty said.

[so_hawkward]

Clint grinned at that. "Well, I'm glad you think so. I hope Lockheed realizes how much you take care of him too sometimes."

"Oh, he knows he's spoiled," Kitty said, and looked thoughtful. "We should probably have them meet one of these times."

"Lockheed and Lucky?" Clint asked, thinking about that for a moment. "Do you think they'd get along?"

"I'm not positive?" Kitty admitted. "I can get Lockheed to behave. I don't know how dogs react to dragons..."

[so_hawkward]

"I don't think Lucky's ever met a dragon, but he's pretty friendly to cats, and cats are meaner than dragons, right?" Clint pretty much considered cats to be meaner than just about anything. "There might be some licking, but if that won't get him set on fire, I'm sure he'll be fine."

"...I'll talk to him beforehand about no fire," Kitty decided.

[so_hawkward]

"I'd appreciate that a lot," Clint said, reaching across the table to try to take Kitty's hand. "You know, your note made me realize how long we've been doing this dating thing. I mean, I know, but seeing it in writing is always nice too."

"Yeah, it was a little weird to realize it's been that long," she admitted. "A good weird. Obviously we're doing something right."

[so_hawkward]

"I like that we're in this together," Clint said. "I know I probably say this a lot, but being with you is a lot different than relationships I've had before. In a good way, I mean."

[throughaphase]

"I don't exactly mind hearing that," Kitty told him. "This is different for me, too. And not just because there hasn't been some awful breakup. Which isn't allowed to happen, by the way."

[so_hawkward]

"I don't want that to happen. Saying that feels a little like jinxing it, but at the same time, we've made it through how much weird crap?" Clint said. "If that hasn't separated us... I don't know, I guess it would take something pretty big."

[throughaphase]

Kitty shook her head. "No big things. I disallow big things."

[so_hawkward]

"Oh, well that should change everything," Clint teased. "As long as you say it's not allowed, the island should listen."

[throughaphase]

"Don't get me wrong," she said. "I think we can handle whatever. But I don't wanna test it."

"Me neither," Clint said, giving her hand a squeeze. "Although I'm pretty sure we'd pass the test."
