Cafe Fina [Monday Afternoon]

This place seemed to be very, very small today. Back in Wonderland, Hatter tended to stick to his tea shop and the area around it so small he was used to but he was part of something bigger. Here, he barely knew two people and had no real purpose. Really, making tea was fun and ordering people around even more so but he was going to get bored if he didn't find a purpose, something to drive him soon.

Maybe Alice would pop up one day. Or maybe she'd forgotten him and was back to dating people who were much better for her. Maybe Hatter didn't care about that. He was propped up in his chair, sipping some specially made tea (that he would not be offering to anyone since it contained some special ingredients) while the staff bustled around and prepped the restaurant for opening.

Soon enough, things were cooking and warming and the door was open to let in a nice breeze.

After he left the contractors at his new place, Hannibal walked around town a bit. The day was a bit muggy, so when he passed by the Cafe, he decided to stop in again.

Hatter wasn't haranguing any poor staff member when Dr. Lecter made his way in today. He was nursing a cup of tea and looking deep in thought. But, he snapped out of it when he realized someone had entered and hopped up.

"Ah, a returning customer," he said, clasping his hands together. "Welcome back."

"Hello again," Hannibal answered, nodding politely. "How have you been doing?"

"I'm beginning to wonder if tumbleweeds are going to roll past the door here," Hatter said, glancing at the open door. "It's very slow. Very quiet. I don't know if I can stand it too much longer."

Right now he didn't have a choice but still.

Hannibal chuckled. "Enjoy it while you can; this is probably the longest it's lasted since I came here. I shouldn't wonder if the island is preparing itself for something truly spectacular in the way of excitement."

And now naturally everyone would blame Hannibal if it did.

"And what would qualify as truly spectacular here?" he had to wonder. "Perhaps a parade? I do love parades."

Hannibal laughed. "Now that is one thing I don't believe I've seen here. Probably my first extraordinary experience was the day that it rained sharks."

Hatter tilted his head and rubbed at his chin thoughtfully.

"Now, when you say sharks, do you mean the supposedly ferocious fish that live in the sea with the big teeth and the unpleasant disposition?"

"I do indeed," Hannibal agreed. "And while they may not normally be as ferocious as claimed, these were somewhat less than happy to find themselves rained upon our town."

"As anyone might be when removed from their natural habitat," Hatter agreed with a nod. "I almost can't blame them. They were probably just acting in self defense."

Still, he shivered and shook his head. "Scary anyway. All those teeth."

"Precisely." Hannibal nodded. "I mostly did my best to ignore them, so long as they did me the same courtesy. Among the oddities that I've seen on this island, they were...probably somewhere in the middle as far as danger."

He grinned. "So as I said, enjoy the quiet while it lasts."

"Only the middle?" he wondered, curious. "If that's the truth, I can't help but wonder what's at the top of that list."

Hannibal grimaced. "There was one weekend of free-ranging Vikings and dinosaurs, which came after a prolonged bout of reality not being what we thought." That was probably at the top of his list, anyway.

"Dinosaurs, you say?" Hatter asked, raising an eyebrow. "Forgive me but I had thought them extinct in this place. That's what most oysters have told me, at least."

"They generally are, yes," Hannibal answered. He raised an eyebrow. "Oysters?"

He'd heard stranger than talking to molluscs, he supposed.

"Oh, that's what you all are," he said, gesturing to the world at large with a hand. "Oysters though I believe the proper word is human. Still an oyster."

"Ah." Hannibal couldn't say he quite approved of that. "An oyster here is a small grey marine creature. Generally non-sentient, though I shouldn't put anything past this island. You aren't human, then?" That part was much more interesting.

"I don't know, I look fairly human, don't I?" Hatter asked, smirking. "Sound fairly human, act fairly human? Does that make me a human? Or no?"

"Your gene sequence would make you human or not," Hannibal added rather dryly. "But unless you intend to provide me with a blood sample for testing, I shall go by your word."

"Do people tend to offer up blood samples to you that willingly?" Hatter had to wonder. "Just like that?"

"Well, I am a doctor," Hannibal pointed out. "That said, I don't generally ask for them, these days."

Take, yes; ask, no.

"I was being sarcastic," he clarified. "Although if you'd like to know if you are genetically human, I'm certain I could find a lab to test it."

"If anyone's to be poking me, I would hope it would be under much better circumstances than trying to discern what I am."

He smiled cheekily at Dr. Lecter and crossed his arms. "Besides, I know what I am. I'm Hatter. New arrival to this fine island and proprietor of this fine establishment. And I can be a very resourceful friend to have."

Hannibal returned the smile. "A very good outlook to have. It's much more important to know who you are than what species you are."

He nodded. "I'm not without resources myself, although most of them are in Baltimore rather than on the island. Still, if you find yourself with questions, I will do what I can to answer them."

"You're very friendly," Hatter said, still not quite used to that in oysters. Most of them tended to be out for themselves or...well, catatonic. "Makes me think there's a string attached somewhere."

Don't worry, Hatter; Hannibal was only ever out for himself.

He chuckled. "It costs nothing to be polite, and it makes the world a much more pleasant place. And it never hurts to have people think well of you."

He shrugged. "Besides - in this place, a lack of knowledge might get more than yourself hurt. The more who are forewarned, the better forearmed we all are." Because Hannibal had no intention of getting killed by someone else's ignorance.

"Very wise," Hatter complimented with a slight nod. "Any idea why this place is seemingly a magnet for the strange? Have I stumbled into some sort of strange nexus between worlds?"

"You have, as it happens," Hannibal answered. "Is this sort of thing known where you're from?"

"Interesting things happen..." Well, Wonderland and all. "...but it has never rained sharks that I'm aware of. I feel like we've missed out, actually. It rained oysters once."

Well, just Alice and he hadn't actually seen her fall from the ship.

Hannibal frowned. "Mollusks or humans?" It was important to specify.

"Oh, humans," Hatter clarified. "Sorry. Not used to having to that word mean more than it does. We don't tend to talk about any sort of mollusk when we say oysters."

"That sounds rather painful," Hannibal noted.

To both the "oysters" and anybody they landed on.

"Well, only if they landed on the ground," Hatter pointed out, shrugging. "Some of them landed on the water. A little softer of a landing, right?"

"True," Hannibal allowed. "Providing they could swim."
