The kitchen staff were all refusing to even go near the freezer.

"The hell is it now?" Eliot groused, storming across the kitchen. "Wait, no, let me guess: the polar bears are restless."

"The polar bears have been eaten!" hissed the busboy. Eliot paused.

"Really?"

The dishwasher and cook shrugged. "Maybe?"

Eliot rolled his eyes. The moment he stepped within five feet of the freezer door, it creaked open. A tentacle uncurled through the gap, wrapped itself around Eliot's ankle, and yanked. Eliot kicked it. "Butcher knife!" The cook grabbed the knife and tossed it underhand to Eliot, who caught it by the handle, leaned foward, and hacked at the tentacle until it stopped trying to drag him in and let him go. Whatever the tentacle belonged to let out a sad whirring noise, and the tentacle slunk back into the freezer, pulling the door shut behind it.

"What the hell?" Eliot demanded.

"Dude," said the cook. "We've been telling you that thing was on the fritz for weeks."

Ask him why he's packing a bag full of extreme weather gear and a samurai sword.

Vic walked in and decided pointedly that she was not going to ask why Eliot was packing extreme weather gear and a samurai sword.

"So. Going to go kill a yeti?"

Instead she was just going to guess.

"Depends," Eliot said. "There a variety of those things that comes with tentacles?"

"Considering my experience with abominable snow creatures is only watching them on Chistmas specials, I have no fucking clue," Vic admitted with a wary look. "You're just fucking with me right? Because the special is calamari..."

"Actual squid," Eliot assured her. "The cook's trying to taunt the thing."

That probably didn't help.

"Yeah. That's smart," Vic said rolling her eyes. "So where is this big tentacle thing?"

"The freezer." Hence the extreme weather gear. "Sometimes I really hate this island."

"You have a giant squid in your freezer," Vic said flatly and let out a groan of frustration. "Great."

She unbuckled her side arm and pulled up her coat.

"Need a hand?"

"Or at least somethin' with tentacles that likes to get grabby." Eliot gave her a short once over. "If you're up for it, sure. I warn ya, though, there's polar bears in there, too."

"In your freezer." She stated dubiously. She sighed and nodded. "Well it's not my first bear hunt. Just promise not to tranq me. I'd rather not repeat that experience."

"You see me packin' a tranq gun?" Eliot gestured with the samurai sword, then gave it a look. "I promise not to stab ya, either."

"No. The lasst time I went on a bear hunt I ended up getting shot by a tranquilizer dart. I was in the hospital hallucinating for two days," Vic explaine as she pulled out her gun and went through a visual check of her magazine and making sure the safety was on. "Much like getting stabbed it's an experience I would like to avoid."

So today is basically going to be my longest day of work ever. 13.5 hour shift with very little to do.

Sure! I'm at 8 hours left and waiting for headache medicine to kick in, so distractions (and patience with occasions of slowness) are appreciated.
