Galactica Point, Friday Morning

The sabacc deck didn't feel quite right in Atton's hands. The cards had the wrong shapes, the wrong colors; he missed the heavy edges of the pazaak cards.

But he'd stolen this one off of Cade sometime in the Night of the Bar Fight, so he was keeping it. He shuffled it again, trying to get a feel for every card, then put one down on the seaside wall that separated him from the plunge down into the water below. You couldn't even switch sabacc cards around properly, he thought vaguely.

Mostly he was thinking about leaving again.

Sure, he'd jumped the gun in a good week, signing up for another class, but there'd be a replacement, right? He could book it right here, right now, on the eve of graduation, and if he was careful, no one would notice he was gone until certain people took the stage to pick up their pieces of paper.

He wondered where his own piece of paper had gone. He wondered if his Outer Rim was still a safe place to vanish to, considering the others knew most of his story there now, at least, and if maybe Cade's was a better idea. He didn't wonder about the way his comlink kept going off-- that was Mical, who apparently still hadn't taken the hint even though Atton had been ignoring his calls since last Friday.

He was backsliding into old habits. He knew that. But that just seemed sane, in the light of recent events, and the change in his status quo coming right up ahead. (Why had he gotten used to that, anyway?)

He laid down a row of sabacc cards on the wall and stared at them. Had to put his hand down on at least three of them to keep them from whipping away in the wind. "See?" he muttered. "Pazaak cards wouldn't fly. Your game is stoopa, Cade."
