The Arms Hotel, Saturday

Normally, Mary enjoyed a good side salad with her entree. But today, Gunther had taken the salad-making to an extreme. He was experimenting with his own homemade vinaigrettes and bringing samples for her to try. So far, Mary had eaten a balsamic-soy combination, a basil-infused olive oil with rice vinegar, and something that tasted suspiciously like Gunther's famous Henri sauce. There were salad bowls lined up across the front desk, and Mary retreated to the lobby seating area to work.

It'd been a while since Ender had last set foot in the hotel, but he felt it was prudent to set up their usual living arrangements when the picnic started winding down.

"Good afternoon," he called.

"Ben and I will be here for the summer," Ender said, putting his bag down. "I thought I'd check us in. I'm glad to see you're still here."

"You've gotten used to the quiet," Ender said wryly, "It happens. Even to big city people."

Well, most people. He and Ben had been on Nagoya since last summer, and staying in one place was starting to get to him.

"It does sound correct," Ender agreed. His mouth curved. "We're here every summer, anyway. I suppose it was just a matter of time before certain spaces started carrying the weight of our ever-impending return."
