When Anders had come back to the dorms from the preserve the evening before, he'd found Rapunzel's side of the room emptier than normal, with a note on his desk telling him she'd gone home and not to worry.

So of course he was worried. And wondering whether she'd picked a day to go when he was already distracted exactly to avoid having him worry at her. He hoped she'd be able to write once she'd settled ... whatever she'd gone home to settle.

Between his roommate's abrupt departure and the fact he was still a girl, Anders was not in the best imaginable mood for work that day. It was a relief to have a rather enormous shipment of herbs to sort and put away; he might go home smelling like an awful combination of cough syrup, licorice and mint, but at least he'd be busy.

There was a short girl with a beard in the shop and Anders had just three guesses on who she might be.

And the first two did not count.

"Why does this land do such things to us?"

"Because it hates up and everything we stand for," Anders informed him, squinting. "You have a beard."

"Of course I do." Because even the lady dwarves had those.

Anders blinked, waiting for further explanation. When none came:

"It's ... quite lovely," he decided. "Accentuates your chest."

[dwarvenswagger]

"Thank you," Thorin replied dryly. "Will be more than glad to return to my normal form."

[not_every_mage]

"I think we all will be," Anders said. "I'm not half bad-looking as a girl, but I still prefer the body I'm used to, thanks very much."

[dwarvenswagger]

Thorin gave him a critical look. "The hair is nice."

He was so kind.

"I wish I knew why it was so light," Anders said, drawing a strand in front of his face to squint at critically. "But at least the length doesn't bother me, since I keep it long anyhow."

[dwarvenswagger]

Preaching to the long haired choir there.

"It is a good color. Lucky."

Being almost golden and all.

[not_every_mage]

"Is it?" Anders asked. "Well,then I'm going to be happy to have it, even if it will be darker again tomorrow."

A beat. "I hope it's darker again tomorrow."

[dwarvenswagger]

"Have such changes remained before?"

[not_every_mage]

"Not that I've ever heard," Anders said grimly. "Though that doesn't mean it never happens, does it?"

[dwarvenswagger]

"It is a foul sort of sorcery that cause these changes," he said with a sigh.

"Hey," Kathy said, coming into the store with a covered plate of Nutella cookies and a thermos of milk. She was pretty sure this was Anders' first genderswap weekend and she figured a good friend would at least check in and make sure he was handling it okay.

If he was, great! They'd have cookies to celebrate. If they didn't, well, Nutella made everything better.

"I brought treats." She held the plate up for his inspection and took that moment to look around avidly. "You know, I think this is my first visit to your store."

Anders had to think about it. "Hi, thank you, and I think you're right," he said. "Is it more or less what you expected? Or does it need more eye of newt?"

"I'm actually disappointed by the lack of spiders webs," Kathy declared. "And why isn't there anything boiling in a cauldron, all green and roiling? It's like you're not even trying."

"I didn't bring Lachlan either, so I don't even have a familiar," Anders said, with mock woe. "You caught me out, Kathy. I've been pretending at this whole magic business. Can I still have a cookie?"

"I dunno," Kathy said, even as she was sliding the plate over the counter to him. "Shouldn't you just be able to magic up cookies? Not depend on me to provide them for you?"

"As luck would have it, my cookie spell doesn't have chocolate in it," Anders said apologetically." "These are better."

And he was going to eat one right away, just to prove it.

"Good?" Kathy asked, grinning at him. "They should still be warm, I made pretty decent time from the dorms down here."

[not_every_mage]

"Very good," Anders said, mouth full of warm chocolatey goo and expression of pure bliss on his face, and then swallowed and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "Sorry. I suppose I should be ladylike today and pretend I have too many manners to talk with my mouth full, shouldn't I?"

"But then I might actually not know who you are," Kathy teased. "Go on, eat them however you want. I made them for you as a kind of, 'Sorry your weekend's unexpectedly filled with girl parts' offering."

See? Who loved you, Anders!

Anders laughed. "I appreciate it, and 'Filled with girl parts' makes it sound like I started dating Orlesian triplets," he informed her. "I just have the one set, thank the Maker."

"Oh, are you saying I should cancel my other surprise?" Kathy asked. "I mean, I thought you'd like the Orlesian triplets, but if you'd rather I went with something else, I guess I still have time to get my deposit back."

"I might be too much woman for the Orlesian triplets right now," Anders said, laughing even harder -- a silvery giggle that was rather different from his normal laugh. "Poor me. Poor triplets."
