The Beach | Monday Afternoon
Stifling heat was nothing new for Ronan. This place wasn't that different from Henrietta. It was the kind of heat that made it hard to breathe, made you just want to lay down and sleep until fall. It was terrible and awful, the kind of weather when people got violent because what else was there to do?
Ronan found himself at the beach before he found someone to pick a fight with, to punch and hurt until his hands were bruised. Swimming wasn't something he did much in Henrietta. Usually there were other things to do. Usually he had a Gansey or an Adam to entertain him. He had nearby streets to race around or Declan to antagonize.
Here, it was rickety rickshaws and people that didn't really know him, didn't care for him. So, he'd swim. Once he hit the sand, he pulled off his shirt, feeling the sun hit the tattoo on his back. He rubbed at the sharp spikes that curled up over his shoulder and pulled on his leather bracelets before wading into the water and diving under.
The heat dissipated. Ronan stayed underneath for as long as he could, blocking out the world. Blocking out Henrietta and Glendower and his friends. His family. His lungs burned but he stayed underneath until he couldn't stand it.
Ronan broke the surface and took a deep breath. He opened his eyes.
Not Henrietta.
