Caritas, Saturday Evening

One of the beer taps kept making a weird sound every couple of minutes.

By Mike's assessment, it sounded kind of like 'blorp'. Although Tino insisted it was more like 'blep'. Whatever it was, whenever either of them got too close to it, the sound was definitely – by their agreement – a 'hiss'. And an angry one, at that.

Sorry, staff safety was more important than the needs of anyone whose favorite beer that happened to be. You could do without it for at least tonight.

Dante showed up to the bar at something vaguely approaching a reasonable time in his torn-up black shirt and no coat, slid into a seat, and ordered a shot that was impressively yellow.

Just to start with.

Alana had fussed over her clothes for a while. It was surprisingly difficult to look like you didn't care, without looking like you really didn't care. She ended up in a black tank top and very short white skirt, and she got there juuuuuust barely after Dante did.

"So," she said, eyeing the very yellow shot with some suspicion, "what are we drinking?"

"Honestly?" Dante leaned against the bar and looked up at her, grinning broadly. "I have no fucking clue. I just told the bar guy to get me something offensive and yellow."

Alana matched his grin with one of her own and then leaned in to sniff the glasses.

"It could be yak pee," she said. "Or Mountain Dew. Or Mountain Dew mixed with yak pee."

Not that she really thought it was.

"Nah, there's at least some alcohol in here," Dante said. "Maybe yak pee and whiskey? Is that a thing?"

"I think we're about to find out if it is," Alana said, shrugging. "Cheers."

She threw back the shot with a swallow and a quick, half-hidden wince.

"I don't think you're wrong about that having some alcohol."

Dante eyed his own, now-empty shot. "But no yak urine," he observed. "I don't know if I'm disappointed or not. I mean, creative, yes. Healthy, probably not."

"Probably not, but I think if you wanted healthy, we should have met at the smoothie place," Alana said, twisting a bit to face him. "How do you like the place, by the way? No zombie guts yet?"

Dante looked at the zombies, who were doing... yeah, they were definitely zombies. "Nope," he said. "They seem busier giving each other a hand. Not sure whose hand."

He turned back to her, his eyes flicking down really quickly to take in the outfit before settling back on her face. "Bar people seem to know how to make all the good shots," he said, "All in all, you seem to know your bars just fine. This newbies says thanks."

"I like being able to help out the hot newbies," Alana said, playing with a bit of her hair and going slightly pink at his appreciation. "If that means drinking shots with one, I can make that sacrifice."

"I know, you're the beer girl, but I'm not gonna let you down, I promise," Dante said. He nodded towards the bartender. "You want to start this off nice and slow, or get right into it?"

Besides the shot they'd already had, of course. That didn't count.

"I think things are usually more fun when you start nice and slow, don't you?" Alana asked, enjoying herself.

Dante looked like he was Very Seriously Considering it. "I can be convinced," he teased, "I guess."

He leaned across the bar. "That means one Buttery Nipple for me and one for the hot girl," he said.

"I'll have to try to be convincing," Alana teased back, and just lightly rested her hand on his arm for a second. "So how'd you become a shot expert, anyhow?"

Dante's eyes widened encouragingly at the touch, though he didn't say anything about it. Might've shifted juuust a little closer, though. "Spent a lot of time hitting the clubs back home," he said, "I used to be a beer guy. Then I spent one night trying to order everything off the menu. Think I hit about... N? Before I found out it was a bad idea."

A bad idea he'd had no qualms about repeating, because it was fun.

"I don't think I'd get past H," Alana mused. "Though the real challenge has to be getting to Z without dying or getting kicked out."

She noticed he had moved closer, so she returned the favor.

[OOC: Sorry! I thought I had replied but it looks like it didn't go through.]

"I tried it again a couple of times," Dante said. "Didn't get around to managing it until I spread it out across a few nights. I guess some things you really do have to go slow and steady on. Who knew?"

He reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"Funny how that works," Alana said, smiling at the touch. "But you don't want to go too slow, or everybody just gets bored. You have to figure out the right pace."

Not really talking about shots anymore, no.

Perfect time for Tino to put down two brown shots, right? Dante thought so.

"Right," he agreed. "See, I consider it my biggest goal in life to avoid boredom." He pulled his hand away about a second too late for it to be completely casual. "But you gotta figure out what the other party likes. So what do you like, Alana, besides books?"

Alana seemed to think the timing was perfect too, from the way she reached for the closest shot glass.

"Nice life goal," she said, rubbing the glass between her fingers. "I like TV shows with a lot of romance and violence, acting, staying in shape, sushi and boys. Oh, and I'm one of those not-from-Earth types, and sometimes it's fun to remind people of that."

She pointed at him playfully. "Your turn. What do you like besides drinking and flirting, Dante?"
