Caritas, Thursday

Cara had been looking forward to a nice quiet shift before classes started back up again. That was before she remembered to check the calendar. So she put up the specials board.

After a certain amount of discussion with certain parties, she took it back down and altered it. After even more discussion, she changed it a third time.

Mod Tino, or try engaging your ever cheerful bar staff in conversation.

Jessica had spent a long day with drunk troopers, so she needed a drink herself, even if she had to pay for it.

And then she saw she didn't have to pay for it! "If everything's free, then I'll have a glass of what's normally the most expensive thing," Jessica ordered since she was clever.

Cara nodded and pulled a bottle out from under the bar. "Hope you like..." She brushed dust off the label. "...whiskey."

"Is it that expensive just because it's dusty and therefore maybe magical, or because it's just old?" Jessica asked. "I'll take it regardless. I'm just curious."

Cara filled a glass and pushed it across the bar.

"Just old." Though that was more of a guess than anything. "If it was magic it'd be where Tino couldn't get to it."

"What if it was a harmless kind of magic? Like it let people grow a really great mustache for a day?" Jessica said before giving the glass a side-eye. Then she had a sip.

"I don't know that I'd really call that harmless." Cara had opinions on moustaches, great or not.

"It could always be shaved off," Jessica said after drinking. "That is extremely whiskey-y. But... no mustache." She patted the area above her lip to make sure it wasn't suddenly hairy. Nope. She was good.

Cara hailed from a land without safety razors. "You haven't got the face for it, anyway."

"I think you're right. If anything, I'd probably have to go with at least a goatee," Jessica decided.

"So long as it isn't an evil one." That could end awkwardly.

"I don't think you could get evil facial hair from whiskey. That's more a tequila kind of thing," Jessica suggested before taking another drink.

Cara shook her head. "I've served Atton more than enough tequila and his facial hair is grumpy, not evil. Now the stuff made from fermented milk though."

Atton would actually be an interesting test case for this for several reasons, but they weren't Jessica's issues to discuss. "I actually didn't know that was a thing. Is that actually a thing? That can't be a thing."

Cara silently turned to the fridge and brought out several bottles.

"Cow, goat, horse, something called a bantha," she said, pointing at each in turn. The liquid in the last one was blue.

"And that's not like a bottled White Russian, right? It's not like somebody decided that mixed drinks with milk should go right in the bottle?" Jessica checked. "That's somebody deciding to actually make milk alcoholic, which is something I didn't even know was possible?"

"Could I get a shot of the blue one?"

"Someone decided to made milk alcoholic," Cara confirmed. She got a fresh glass and poured. "Some people have too much time on their hands."

"I'd make fun of them for it, but here I am, alone on New Year's Eve, making a point to try it," Jessica said. "At least they made money from selling the bottle. I'm going to regret this, aren't I?"

"Probably." No need to look so amused, Cara. "At least you're not paying for it."

"I might pay for it. Not in money, but in an upset stomach or maybe death," Jessica pointed out before drinking the blue stuff.

She was silent for a moment as she put the glass down. "I don't know if that's terrible, not as bad as I expected, or both. But I'm not doing that again."

"More whiskey." It wasn't a question, as evidenced by the refilled tumbler.

"More whiskey," Jessica agreed. "At least I know to tell people not to drink the blue stuff now. I've learned something and I can share that knowledge."

"Of course, it's debatable how many of them would have drunk it in the first place."

Tino didn't count.

Jessica drank some whiskey to get the bantha taste out of her mouth before answering. "It's possible that I have a greater sense of adventure than some people," Jessica said. "But really, who can look at something blue like that and not at least wonder?"

Someone who grew up without refrigeration and understood that milk really wasn't supposed to be blue?

"Very few, I imagine," she said dryly.

"I think you'd be surprised. Not REALLY surprised or anything, but it would be more than you think," Jessica suggested.

"I have noticed a lack of common sense on the island." Shut up, it was totally different when she did it.

"Oh, do you collect rare pennies?" Jessica asked. Whether that joke made it out of Jessica's head and into the air because of the blue milkohol or because Jessica just enjoyed dumb jokes was up for debate. "They'd have to be pretty uncommon cents to make the effort worthwhile."

Cara chose not to dignify that pun with a response. Also, even after five odd years, decimal currency still seemed more trouble than it was worth.

"Come on, it was clever," Jessica prodded.

"It was a pun."

Puns weren't clever unless they involved violence or sex.

"It was clever wordplay," Jessica suggested.

"Pun."

Cara had very little poetry in her soul.

"It was a woman finding a punchline in the least likely placer and not being afraid to bring it out in front of somebody who might not appreciate it," Jessica reasoned.

"Fine, it was the most amazing joke I've ever heard."

Pun.

"I knew I could convince you if I was annoying enough for long enough," Jessica said victoriously.

For the mingling.

It's the future! There are no hoverboards, but there are illegal fireworks.

Technically, hoverboards do exist! They just have wheels and are more likely to go up in flames than illegal fireworks. I think they got the name "hoverboard" by threatening to burn somebody who was going to name them something else.

*refuses to acknowledges something with wheels as a hoverboard instead of a deranged segway*
