It was raining out, which always gave Ada a headache. Rain rain go away, come again-- never, actually. Ada would be fine with never.

She turned up the music to try and drown out the sound of the rain, and grabbed the next item off the alterations rack before digging out the sewing kit. With the prom-dance coming up, there was plenty of work to do to distract herself.

Demon Marcus was open, and the seamstress was in!

He could knock people out and take their stuff - though he could never get himself to do it to regular, normal people. (He'd bite anyone who said anything about it.)

Ada rolled her eyes, but a moment later, Dante's phone would be ringing.

She was a Barker, dammit, good stories had to be told as in-person as possible, not via text message.

"Tired of using your hands?" Dante joked.

"A girl likes a little variety, Dante," Ada replied. "'An there's some things where you just gotta use your mouth."

"Ah, who am I to argue with the carnie queen," Dante said, sitting up, grinning.

"Remember that, next time you get the urge to be contrary," Ada laughed. "You just admitted that you shouldn't argue with me. 'M gonna hold you to that!"

Yeah, it would never work, but a girl could try.

"You can try," Dante called back cheerfully.

At least this was a bright spot in a shitty day.

"You want a story or not, Mister Sassy Pants?" she asked, shaking her head. "Or did you just trick me into calling you so you can tease me?"

Which, that would be fine, but she was going to tease right back.

"Would I ever do that?" Dante said, half-sing-songing. "C'mon. Hit me with your story."

"Of course you would, you're a terrible boy who does whatever you damn well feel like," Ada laughed, standing up to go lock the door to the shop and flip the sign to 'Closed: On Break.' If she was going to do story time, she wanted to stretch out on the couch in the back, not deal with customers.

"Let's see...oh! So, once upon a time, there was a carnival princess who was probably ten or eleven or something around that age and the carnival had just pulled into Indiana. She hated Indiana--" because for some reason her mother always remembered she liked Indiana, but didn't remember her daughter, "--because the people seemed incredibly dull."

"Well, it's Indiana," Dante offered. "Nothin' out there but corn, right?"

"Corn, dust, soybeans, cows, and more dust and more corn," she agreed. "And the locals looked like they'd been made outta dust."

MEAN, Ada.

"So, the Carnie Princess and some of her loyal retainer-cousins, decided the scew with the locals this time around."

Dante stretched his legs out, settling against the back of the bench. "Best fun the locals ever had."

"Not that kind of screw, Dante," she sighed. "Anyway, the Princess and her court had just snuck in to see this movie in the last town, called 'Children of the Corn...'"
