The Devil's Nest, Friday Evening
The island had shifted again. At least this time there was no screaming sun to keep Allie from getting to work on time.
Which meant a pouting Tiny was back to washing glasses behind the bar while she supervised.

"How about starting at the beginning."

He shook his head. "Not as easy as it sounds. But...vampires, shadows, in my world - we're combinations of demonic forces, divine ones, and humans. Near as I can figure, the only real weakness we've got is silver. But a while back, the church brainwashed everyone to think all the others were true - sunlight, stakes, garlic, only changing into certain animals, and so forth. We'd figured that out and started throwing it off."
He shrugged and nodded his chin at Allie. "I don't know if you're the same or not, but that's why sun and things don't bother me. Because I know they're not supposed to."
no subject
"Kanin said a stake to the heart wouldn't kill us outright, but it can put us into hibernation and that's something only the strongest can survive. Garlic hasn't been an issue for me and I don't have a problem with silver." She reached under the collar of her t-shirt and pulled out a simple silver cross hanging on a chain. "Or crosses."

He felt that last bit had to be said, just in case Allie decided to try something silly like standing out in the sun the next morning.
no subject
"I'm going to have to test that theory at some point. Probably when we're back to where we belong and there's a normal sun. The worst that'll happen is that I'll get a bit scorched." It's not like it hadn't happened before.
"Control at a molecular level? Is that why you can shape shift? Which is not something I can do by the way."

He thought of something he could do to show her, something small, and in the end held his hand up and slowly turned his fingers to mist.

Then Allie noticed his hand. Which was neat, and probably would have been slightly more impressive if she didn't have a friend that could make herself incorporeal on a regular basis.
"That has got to be damn useful."
no subject
"It can be, yeah," Peter agreed. "You can't change at all? Do you still heal fast?"
no subject
After a few moments of focusing on her own hand, Allie shook her head. Was he surprised she had to try? "Nope, no changing for me. But I can heal quickly, although it is related to how badly I'm injured and how hungry I am. I've got speed and strength, I can hear and smell incredibly well if I concentrate, but sunlight burns and while I can force myself to stay awake after the sun comes up for some time, my body prefers to sleep till the sun goes down."

He took a drink and then cocked his head at her. "So, what are rabids?" He hadn't forgotten.
no subject
Allie took a drink from her bottle, using the pause to get her thoughts in order. "As far as I can tell, my world was a lot like the one we should hopefully get back to at the end of the summer. Then, about fifty or sixty years before I was born, Red Lung happened. It was a virus, and it killed millions."

[Taking that as sleep not boredom. :) SP?]

He shrugged. "Shoot."

"When you say certain animals? I'm going to guess that a bat was one of them?"
no subject
no subject
"How much have you heard about the island's bits of whimsy?"
no subject
He eyed Allie curiously. "I've been told it has moods, and we might get strange weather, or changed into kids or the opposite sex or something. Bats, too?"

He changed entirely to mist, then a hawk (he was out of practice with bats), then back to himself - clothes and all.

He smiled a bit wistfully; he hadn't seen Kuromaku in a while, even before his time in Hell.

Hey, he was pretty sure it couldn't start a fire on its own.
