It'd been long enough since the last attack that Dante found himself poking at the guitars again. Partly to distract himself from wondering when the next one would be. Partly because the jittering had worn off and a completely different kind of restlessness - the bored kind - had hit him again.

He didn't have the money to pay for as much as a pick right now. He knew that. But come afternoon, the boredom had conquered enough of his reservations. He picked up the red-and-black guitar and tried to remember the chords Starsmore had tried to teach him last time. Without the amp. For now.

He wondered which chords the Elena Huston record back home in his trailer used.

Ada pulled out the two sodas, leaving them on the counter while she grabbed her two tofu tacos. "I needed an excuse t' get out of th' dorms today, an' I hadn't seen where you worked yet. Lunch seemed a good reason," she said, unwrapping her first taco. "B'sides, you're always bringin' me treats!"

"'Cause you're a growing mermaid," Dante said. "Gotta make sure you stay upright and running."

And then he wasn't saying much, because he was shoving half a taco in his mouth.

It was a sign of how much Ada had gotten used to feeling safe(r) in Fandom -- or at least around Dante -- that she didn't even flinch at 'mermaid.'

"Don't think 'm gonna get much taller!" she laughed, shaking her head. "--I dunno how you fit all that in your face, an' I don't wanna know."

To be fair, he cracked a lot of mermaid jokes around her. Maybe trying to make her feel normal about it, though not consciously.

Dante waggled his eyebrows, swallowing back the (enormous) bite before answering. "I have a lot of practice putting things in my mouth," he joked. "Especially tacos."

At least they weren't jokes about hot tail. That might get him swatted at.

"Startin' to think you could eat most of a pizza in one go," she teased. "Just fold it up and gulp it down."

But she didn't have a tail ~~yet~~!

"If I'm really hungry," Dante said, laughing. He stuffed the rest of the taco into his mouth and swallowed. "But the tacos are good too."

He snagged his soda next. "So what've you been up to, besides pigging out?"

"I met a friend of 'Bela's last weekend, that was fun," she said, grinning a little bit. "Mostly just class, work, texting home t' thank Uncle Chester for bein' cool with everything."

"Zevran? I met him too," Dante said, smirking to himself. "Second time. Made sure to say hello again."

He opened up the can and took a sip. "Didn't meet any of yours, though."

"'Bela can bring him over t' visit anytime," Ada agreed. "I think Chester mostly stayed busy ~~being handwaved because I got busy~~ with my teachers."

"...kinda glad you didn't meet Duncan. He still thinks 'm eleven an' he gets...overprotective. An' objected t' Chester lettin' me stay."

"Did your uncle talk him out of it?" Dante said. "... Clearly didn't pick you up and drag you off home."

"What Chester says, goes," Ada said simply, adding some salsa on to her taco. "A carnival ain't a democracy. When he makes a Decision, it's final, an' if you don't like it you can go somewhere else."

"Duncan might argue, an' make it clear he don't agree, but Duncan's just Head Scout. Until Chester picks someone t' take over th' carnival, he's in charge."

"Okay," Dante said, tilting his head.

Then he snagged the other taco. "Happy to see 'em, otherwise?"

Ada looked down at her taco and smiled. "Yeah," she admitted with a shrug. "It was nice, but kinda weird havin' them here? If'n that makes sense."

"Meet anyone else interesting? B'sides Zevran?"

"Nah, not really," Dante reported. "It was a quiet picnic, y'know? Mostly wound up there for the free food."
