There was a weird vibe on the island today.

No, not just because the zombies were still playing songs from their greatest hits CD. No, a different kind of weird vibe. Nothing that seemed to be touching Mike personally, but still.

He was behind the bar, feeling the randomest desire to fill up his time and keep himself occupied by texting. Except he didn't actually have anyone to text.

Maybe he'd send Derek updates on the house.

Did two cowboys make it better? It wasn't a surly werewolf, but there they were. And in slightly better spirits than yesterday. Though it was really only noticeable on Goody.

"Can I have a bottle of whiskey and two glasses, young man?" Goody asked with a smile as Billy eyed the band like he was contemplating using one of his knives on the lead singer.

What about two samurai? And was it okay if one of them was very, very white? For what it was worth, at least the white one was looking extremely bemused as he made his way into the bar.

To make up for it, the Japanese one was looking extremely amused in turn.

"Sake," Nathan decided. "Today it's going to have to be sake."

Lucky Goody! The pair of cowboys was now being eyed by at least one half of a pair of samurai. The half that was recovering from the cowboy lifestyle and who was currently looking just the slightest bit winded by the unexpected visit from a certain somebody who he'd helped kill. Years ago.

The only way Nathan could possibly be more stunned would be if Zeb had decided to come back from the dead for a few days, too. He'd forgotten that the island often had a way of throwing people for a loop.

"They're already dead," Nathan shared, finally, leaning over and offering Goody and Billy a smile that was still more or less recovering from the shock. "Attacking them now isn't going to make him stop singing."

"So am I, but it would make me feel better," Billy replied in a flat voice as he accepted the glass of whiskey Goody was offering him.

Sorry, Nathan. His sense of humor was a little off.

It made Goody laugh at least! Then again, Goody also had a rather interesting sense of humor.

"Mr. Algren! I want you to meet my associate, Mr. Rocks," he said with all the geniality a southern upbringing had granted him. "And it seems you have a guest as well."

Honestly, Mike was just glad for an excuse – no, reason – to put his phone away. The state of his social life was abysmal and he didn't really need to dwell on that any further right now. So: phone, pocket. Done.

"Right, coming right up," he said, as he went to grab what'd been ordered. "Welcome to Caritas, too, if you haven't been before."

"I am newly arrived in this fair city," Goody agreed. "As a schoolteacher."

Okay, so guess tonight's weirdness was going to be people looking real old-timey. Mike could roll with that. Just like he rolled with just about everything else.

"Sake? Think that's the first time I've heard that order here." In all honesty, he moved a ton of beer and whisky. "Hold on a sec, though, I'll find it."

"A pleasure," Nathan said, giving a respectful little bow of his head. "Mr. Robicheaux, Mr. Rocks, this is Mr. Katsumoto," he said, nodding to each person in turn as he said their name. "Master of conversation."

And now it was his turn to smile faintly, if wryly. This was probably not a visit he'd be writing home to Taka about.

"A pleasure," Katsumoto chimed in, clearly much more at ease with this whole situation than Algren was. He'd had a few years to be used to the whole 'being dead' thing. After that, everything else was pretty straightforward.

And then, because he couldn't resist, he gave a little smile of his own and leaned in slightly. "And it would make me feel better also."

Sorry, zombies. You were terrible.

"Thank you," Nathan said, giving the bartender a grateful smile.

... At more or less the same moment Katsumoto piped up with, "Actually, I find myself curious about this 'whisky' that I've read about."

Nathan cast a sideways glance at his companion, and then smiled and shook his head. 'Read about.' In Nathan's own journal, no doubt. That thought earned a chuckle.

"Or whisky, if it's easier. I suppose nobody ever accused him of not being adventurous."

Billy just gave 'Mr. Katsumoto' a bit of a look. Basically sizing him up to see if he could take him in a fight should Goody's taste in friends had gone down hill. Or stayed the same depending on who was being discussed. Faraday.

Then took a sip of his whiskey as he decided he wasn't terrible.

And Japanese was a new one for this country.

Which Goody was going to pretend he didn't notice.

"Enchanté," he said cheerfully. "Now isn't this an interesting coincidence?"

"The visitors, the bar, or both?" Nathan had to wonder. He reached for his own drink, though mostly just sat there with his glass in his hand. He wasn't so much a drinker these days as he used to be.

"Perhaps," Katsumoto offered, holding up his own drink, "the whisky."

Which he was actually enjoying thus far. Mostly for the experience. Sake, it was not.

"Ohh, shoulda guessed," Mike replied as he set the glasses and the bottle down on the bar in front of them. "Kinda tends to be how we get most of our people."

"The dead visitors," Billy suggested, leaning back against the bar.

Goody made a little strained noise at the reminder until Billy somehow managed to mysteriously end up in his personal space for a second or three.

"How exactly did you gentlemen meet?"

"Is it now?" Goody asked, opening the bottle to pour himself and Billy a drink each. Billy only then acknowledged Mike's presence with a nod of thanks.

Algren and Katsumoto exchanged a glance at that one.

"It's... something of a long story," Nathan hedged, after a moment.

Long stories were never one to stop Katsumoto, mind.

"He was hired to kill me," he said, quite pleasantly. "It didn't work."

At least that time. In the end, it had been Algren to kill him. But it had been different, then. It had been a favor, as a friend.

That made perfect sense!

And at that Billy smirked, glancing at Goody out of the corner of his eyes.

"Goodnight was hired to pull me in on a bounty."

"And it did not work either," Goody continued, back in good spirits.

"He didn't take you prisoner for months on end into the mountains, leaving you trapped there through the winter too, did he?"

Nathan was smiling all the while he said this, of course.

A beat.

"For months on end, in the mountains, through the winter."
