The Boards, Tuesday Evening

Alright, so it was that holiday. That holiday, not the other ones. He liked one or two of the other ones, and this one, Jono could really have just decided to take or leave. But here he was. At the Boards. On that holiday.

And he'd once again brought beer.

That stuff was basically his secret weapon, these days, along with the sign that he'd put out and the posters around town.

There was also a large net full of ridiculous heart-shaped balloons hanging up over the stage. And heart-shaped foil confetti. Ino had helped Jono set up the entire mess of it, and since there was a decent number of people on the island who weren't of high school dance age, he imagined that he might even have a chance of getting rid of that beer, too.

Really, not a holiday that did anything for him, but subjecting drunken karaoke to mushy couples or heartbroken singles alike was something he lived for.

Well, it wasn't like Jenkins had anything better to do.

Actually, he had a large number of better things to do. He just wasn't currently doing any of them.

He wasn't particularly fond of beer, but he took one anyway and sipped delicately at it in Stone's honor.

"Karaoke," he said thoughtfully. "You know, not that long ago, people gathered in bars would just start singing without concern for accompaniment or knowledge of all the words. We'll see if this is an improvement."

"Modern man is much too concerned with getting the wrong things right," Jenkins said with a sigh. Then did a double take when he actually saw Jono. "Oh martyred Valentine, would you look at that. You're remarkably unconcerned for a man on fire."

"Yes, I suppose that would do it," Jenkins mused. "You're not a member of the fey. You're not nearly obnoxious or . . . flighty enough. Is it some sort of magical curse?"

Hannibal had made chocolates in the shape of roses and hearts, and in honor of the night's tackiness, had actually dusted them more than liberally with pink and gold glitter.

Oh, Jono saw. And he was giving Hannibal a wave of something like mingled amusement and appreciation, swirled with a touch of the colour gold and a faint cinnamon scent.

Telepathy could be expressive in ways the human voice couldn't manage. He appreciating that, sometimes.

"I thought you might." Hannibal thought affection and amusement back at him. "And they seemed appropriate. I have other things at home for later."

Which he was thinking about just then. They had a lot less glitter and a lot more berry to them.

"Very wrong," Hannibal agreed cheerfully. "This is your terrible Valentine's party, and you mustn't disappoint people."

It was Hannibal. Of course he cheated.

Ah, chocolates! Jenkins did enjoy a good sugar rush. "There may well have been no greater discovery by man in the last thousand years than the blending of processed cacao, milk, and sugar." He bit into a chocolate rose. "Simply marvelous."

Amused, Hannibal gave him a little bow. "Thank you. I haven't seen you around yet." He held out a hand. "Doctor Hannibal Lecter."

"Jenkins." He inclined his head in a small bow rather than take the offered hand. "These are your creations, I take it?"

Hannibal took his hand back and bowed again in turn. "They are. Somewhat more ostentatious than I usually would be involved with, but I was assured the party was meant to be tacky."

There was beer. That wasn't why Peter was here, but he'd take one anyway. It seemed to make socializing easier with a bottle in your hand.

"Mr. Octavian," Jenkins greeted, very nearly politely. "How are your dahlias holding up?"

Look at that, he was in a friendly mood! It helped that he hadn't just discovered that he was responsible for another collection of potentially volatile magical objects.

"Mr. Jenkins." Peter nodded back. "They seem okay, thanks. We've mostly been worried about roses lately. Not possessed ones, just the sheer volume of them. How's your new store going?"

"It is that time of year, yes. Still, giving roses is a much nicer tradition than whipping young women with strips of bloody goat hide." But then, weren't most things? "As for my store. I've nearly completed inventory, and nothing's exploded or attempted to kill me yet. So I'd say it's going remarkably well."

Peter blinked, trying to remember which tradition Jenkins might be talking about, but did it really matter? Roses were nicer no matter what.

"That's a low bar, but I'm glad to hear it anyway," he said. "If anything does get that bad, feel free to call for help," he offered. "Even if you know your way around that stuff, I'm strong, I know magic, and I'm really hard to kill."

Karaoke!

There is a karaoke setup on the stage. It has access to damn near any song you can think of.

Occasionally, when random songs finish, Jono has rigged the whole thing up to drop balloons on unsuspecting people.

Because that is how he rolls.

Party Games?

Jono found an old Twister mat. And there's enough room for charades or whatever else your heart desires.
