Groovy Tunes, Friday

This Friday saw Dante up front with the acoustic guitar again, still puzzling about the Kathy and the Raven things. So he was picking his way through the bassline of an Iggy Pop song. And the guitar line of another one.

Then he tried figuring out how to make Combichrist sound good on acoustic. It wasn't entirely working.

At least, that was what the blue guys booing him said.

"Everyone's a critic."

Raven poked her head in some time in the afternoon. "You're not Jono," she observed. "I guess I should have guessed from the lack of grunge."

"Yeah, sorry, I try not to play shit that went out with Kurt Cobain!" Dante said easily, but when he looked up from his guitar, there was a curiosity in his eyes. "Hey, Raven."

"Hey Dante." Raven nodded to the guitar. "I didn't know you played."

"Picked it up over the summer," Dante said, shrugging a shoulder. "I'm just messing around with it."

In fact, he was setting it down on the ground now. "Starsmore's not in today," he said. "Is it important?"

A little bit. He was one of the few people she figured would actually get the crap she'd done getting back to Fandom. "Not really. Just -- wanted to say hi." She shrugged, wandering over to a shelf and flipping idly through CDs without looking at the labels. "What've you been up to?"

Kathy had mentioned Dante right before the whole Valentine's Day emotional massacre, but the rest of that conversation had kind of eclipsed that.

"Nothing important," Dante said lightly.

Barring the entirety of last weekend, but even his inclination to blurt that stuff out to people he knew had limits. He didn't know Raven that well.

Though he'd met her enough times that the, "Are you okay?" came out naturally.

Raven sighed. "Let me guess: radio?"

She hadn't been listening to it very closely these last few days. You didn't get much reception when you were living mostly on the streets.

"Today's my day," Dante said, sagging back in his seat.

[tigerundercover]

"I'm fine." Like the narrative had said, they didn't know each other that well. "Hardison talked me down. No need to worry."

"What happened?"

Dante didn't exactly listen to radio every day; he sounded kind of thrown by the whole thing.

[tigerundercover]

Raven shrugged, but her mask of unconcern was cracking. "Kathy asked what happened to her family. She didn't like the answer."

It was enough to make Dante sit up. "Fuck," he said, frowning.

Didn't sound like he needed to ask for details.

[tigerundercover]

"Yeah." Really, it said plenty even without details. "I don't think she's been home since. So . . . sorry about that."

"Not exactly something you did, right?" Dante said, shrugging. "Any clue where she's at?"

Not that he was going to go chasing after Kathy.

Probably.

[tigerundercover]

"Nope," Raven said. "And . . . I mean, I did kill her parents. So."

"... You're gonna have to back up a bit."

[tigerundercover]

Oh, so you did want all the details.

Raven sighed. She was almost getting good at telling this story. "When I got to her apartment I was too late. Her dad was an ex. Sarah was dead. Her mom was barely alive. So I killed them."

Yeah, well. Dante hadn't expected the 'killed them' part, so sue him.

"Oh," he said slowly. "Fuck."

Yeah, you'd used that one before.

"... That was the right thing."

[tigerundercover]

"No," Raven said. "There was no right thing."

[rebelseekspizza]

"They were gonna die anyway," Dante said slowly. Fuck, though, Sarah?

"So Kathy's probably crying her eyes out somewhere."

[tigerundercover]

Yeah, she got that part. Still didn't make it 'right'. There were no absolutes in that world. She was beginning to think there weren't any at all.

"Probably," she agreed. "And she's definitely not going to want to see me again."

Dante frowned. "...What makes you say that?" he said. "You're her best friend, right?"

"And I killed her parents. Right or not, that's not something you just get over."

[rebelseekspizza]

"It's Kathy," Dante said. "You're probably not the one she's pissed at."

[tigerundercover]

"Yeah well I should be!" Raven shoved away from the CD case she was looking at and went stalking towards the back of the store. Kathy being an idiot didn't make her feel better. "You all keep piling the guilt on her and she just takes it, but this one is on me."
