The Park, Monday Afternoon

Okay. Kanan was dealing with the events of last week about as well as he'd ever dealt with anything, which mostly meant not thinking about it for as long as he could possibly manage, punctuated by drinking, flirting, and going out of his way to find distractions wherever they might be. But he had yet to let himself have time to actually process what had happened, and while Hera was not only a great houseguest, but also one that had some idea of where he had come from, the idea of him just setting down to meditate in the middle of the living room floor made him uneasy. Nothing against Hera in particular, of course. It was just that Kanan had spent several years cultivating a healthy paranoia when it came to doing anything that might be construed as even remotely Jedi, and it wasn't going to go away that easily.

That said, taking the dog for a walk and pausing for a quiet sit on a bench in the park? He could totally do that. Anyone passing by would probably just think he'd fallen asleep there, watching Stance playing with the ducks.

And absolutely not meditating, quietly prodding at his connection with the Force. Not even a little bit.

Of course, when you had a houseguest with very little to do, the chances she'd go for a walk too were pretty good, actually.

She was pretty sure Kanan hadn't fallen asleep there, but he might be close to it, so she just grinned and went up to Stance. "Hey there, sweetie." He did his best to try to knock her over with enthusiasm, and she laughed at him.

Kanan inhaled. And Kanan exhaled. And Kanan found himself bunching up in the shoulders a little, bowing his head to try to sell that 'just passing out in the park' deal he had going for him. But now the dog was barking at someone in particular instead of just a bunch of ducks, and that laugh was familiar enough that he couldn't help but sigh and open his eyes, glancing Hera's way.

"Stance, you know you're not supposed to jump on people," he chided, which mostly just earned him a doggy grin and a tail wag for his troubles.

"At least he's not what we'd call a dog," Hera pointed out, grinning at Kanan. "I'd be flat on my back." She rubbed Stance's ears in the way she'd figured out he liked.

"Didn't mean to disturb you," she said. "Sorry." But since he was clearly awake now, she was coming over to join him, Stance bounding along with her. "This little guy's hard to ignore, though."

"Ah, you didn't disturb anything important," Kanan... lied, really, shrugging his shoulders and watching them as they approached. "I should have been keeping an eye on him anyway, I guess."

He sort of had been. One didn't exactly need to have one's eyes open in order to make sure one's dog wasn't actively murdering ducks, though, even without using the Force.

"Doesn't look like there's much trouble he can get into around here, anyway," Hera said. "As long as the ducks don't mind."

She paused. "Those are ducks, right? They're not called rancors or anything?"

"They are ducks," Kanan replied, giving Hera a wry smile. "Well, those ones are. The slightly bigger ones are geese. And those pink ones with the sticks for legs are called flamingos. I... I have no idea what those are about, really."

They were ridiculous and pink. As far as he knew, people didn't eat them. Maybe they were decorative?

"I saw them my first day here," Hera said. "They're really kind of ridiculous, aren't they?" She grinned at Kanan and bumped against his shoulder as she sat down.

"Means they're pretty much perfect for this place," Kanan replied, glancing sidelong at her and offering her a smile. It wasn't that too-wide trying to sell her something smile that he'd used in excess back on Gorse. This one was softer. Maybe not entirely heartfelt, but still more sincere than most. "Weird island. Weird planet."

Probably a weird system, too. Now that he had the Escape, maybe he'd do some off-world exploring. Meditating would be much easier in space, he was sure.

"Not bad, though. Like the milk - a little weird, but not bad. And a lot quieter than I've seen in a while. You too, I'm guessing."

Even if what had happened on Gorse wasn't normal, suicide flying probably wasn't a quiet occupation.

It really wasn't. But it had been good enough to keep the Empire off his back. Right up until it hadn't been, anymore.

"Me too," he agreed. "Not that this place doesn't see its share of excitement, either. It's just... a different sort of excitement."

Usually it was far less personal than it tended to be back home.

"Settling in okay?"

"Mm," Hera answered with a nod. "Though I still need to find out who owns that junkyard. I'd hate to have them confiscate my ship for not paying berth fees. And they might have a few parts I can use."

"You know..." Kanan looked thoughtful. "In my time here, I haven't once heard anybody talk about the owner of the junkyard. It might be worth just stopping by the main office and asking about it."

He gave his shoulders a shrug.

"Better safe than sorry, there. The Ghost is too nice a ship to risk it."

"I thought I noticed you drooling a bit over her figure," Hera teased, a bit smug. Hey, the Ghost was a nice ship, and she knew it.

"What can I say? I know attractive when I see it," Kanan shot back, grinning, and leering maybe just the slightest bit. If nothing else, he could slip into his 'lecherous drifter' persona with basically no effort at all, these days.

He'd worry about coping... another time. Again.

Hera laughed. "Well, I'm not one to argue." She shook her head at his antics.

"Aren't you?" Kanan smiled faintly, and then shook his own head and settled back into the bench. "Well, good. Either way, if you want to find out who runs the place, we can head over there right now. Better safe than sorry, and all that?"

It'd be another good distraction, at least for a while.

"I could," Hera said. "And I wouldn't mind the company, but if you're enjoying it here, I can go on my own. I think I can find it," she added, grinning.

"Oh yeah, you can tell I was practically having a party here," Kanan snorted. "Just me, Stance, and the ducks. Couldn't contain my excitement."

What with how he'd been totally sleeping and not at all meditating on the bench, and all.

"After the week we had, I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to sleep for another week," Hera said.

She stood and offered him her hand. "But since you want more excitement, come on. Let's go conquer...some paperwork, probably."

"What is crew for, if not paperwork?" Kanan snorted, though he took Hera's hand and pulled himself to his feet, then waved Stance over to join them. "Best to get this over with, since she's too big for the roof, anyway."

Hera rubbed Stance's head. "Oh, good. Better you than Chopper." She headed the direction of the junkyard.

"He'd probably just write horrible things about the manager's mother in Aurebesh," Kanan decided, ambling along beside her. Stance merrily trotted along, situating himself between them. "If he could write. Can he write?"

Kanan tried not to spend enough time around Chopper to really be sure either way.

"Theoretically," Hera said, shrugging. "He doesn't really have a reason to, though. And don't worry, he'll warm to you."

"I won't hold my breath waiting," Kanan snorted. "Just so long as he doesn't mess with the dog, we're fine."

Stance gave his tail a happy wag. They were talking about him! They used the dog-word!

"He won't," Hera promised. "Even if we have to keep them at opposite ends of the ship."
