Syndulla's Scrap, Friday

So Hera was managing a junkyard now. Which basically meant she was making money to berth her ship and had the run of whatever this place considered junk.

Some of which was just scrap metal, sure, but some of which was...decidedly odd.

Like a piece that looked like half a kloo horn welded to an arc emitter sitting on a null-grav trampoline.

...maybe she shouldn't ask.

It wasn't that Peridot was skipping work, exactly. It was just that it was easy to lose track of time when you didn't do things like sleep to break up one day from the next.

And sometimes, you just had to crawl into the junkyard to look at the stuff. So, a little green triangle? Was totally skittering around on four legs, picking up pieces of junk, inspecting them, and then tossing them to the side while she looked for something to better suit her purposes.

"Nope, nope, nope," Peridot was muttering to herself, picking up old, discarded radios and toasters and whatnot, giving them a thorough inspection, and then tossing them off to the side. "No good. Ugh, Earth technolo--"

She froze and blinked up at the voice, and then kind of sank down, ducking behind a pile of... well... scrap.

It was... mostly effective?

Peridot peered up.

And up. And up.

She was clutching to a toaster oven and looking a little bit like a deer in the headlights.

"... Who're you?"

This was Peridot's toaster oven and you couldn't have it, Hera.

... Not being readily familiar with hand-shaking and still not entirely used to people being nice to her, she eyed the offered hand, and then clutched to her find even more tightly.

"Peridot," she replied, a touch dubiously. "I'm Peridot."

"Spare parts," Peridot replied, and then glanced over her shoulder at the toy she'd brought with her; the little robot duck she'd been working on ever since Eliot had his class make bread that one time. "For my duck. It's hard to find components that are compatible, even among other machines from Earth."

Stupid Earth technology couldn't make up its mind about what it wanted to be. Peridot suspected that there had been rapid development fairly recently in Humanity's history, and everything along the way had been kind of...

Well, primitive. A bit like bashing two rocks together to make sparks.

"Or something," Peridot agreed, tentatively setting down the toaster oven, and then making her way over to pick up the duck, which she then held up for Hera to inspect. "I need something to help maximize the efficiency of output after processing the solar input. The panels that I had were enough for a duck that walks and says 'quack,' but then I was informed that my duck wasn't... real enough."

She frowned.

"So now it processes bread into eggs. Or... egg-shaped bread. I drew inspiration from the humans' bread-heating devices, as I noticed that bread becomes more structurally sound when further heated, but dividing the energy that the duck can currently process between multiple tasks is... taxing."

Only Peridot would invent a solar-powered duck toaster.

"Earth... wires." Peridot wrinkled her nose. "Copper? It's difficult to tell for certain, they cover their wires in this sort of... plastic. Plastic?"

Earth, man. Earth.

Peridot looked up at Hera, a grateful expression on her face.

"Quack," said the duck. Just like that. It said quack, instead of actually quacking.

Peridot's duck still needed some work.

"It should," she agreed. "That would be... I would appreciate your assistance. I'm still getting used to this planet and what it has to offer."

At least so far as small fare went. She did play a large role in building the drill that saved Earth, after all.

"Me too," Peridot admitted. "I couldn't even write my name."

She gave her head a little shake.

"I'm not from this galaxy," she admitted, "but you can see it from here, on a clear night."

"Can't you?" Peridot was pretty much scurrying to keep up with Hera as they moved through the junkyard. "My people have ships that can travel from galaxy to galaxy within a matter of hours. But..." She looked thoughtfully at Hera. "I've never seen a species quite like yours before. I've met somebody with similar..."

She waved the hand that wasn't holding her duck toward her head.

"But she has more..."

And then she waved the same hand toward the top of her head.

"That," Peridot agreed, snapping her fingers and breaking into a grin. "She's my roommate. I don't know her very well, though. I don't spend time in our room, really."

Unless it was to stash her things, whenever she actually got a new possession.
