"Okay, what is this nerdy crap?"

The piece of paper in Tamsin's hands was definitely some kind of nerdy crap, she was sure of it. Still, it was their best shot at at least getting the island back to somewhere that had actually decent bars.

She eyed the weird rocks embedded into the wall by Galactica Point. "I always thought some kid with too much time and no basement to fester in had come up with this," she muttered. She glanced over her shoulder at the waiting hordes. "Okay, here we go. Up, up, down, down--"

Oh god. It really was nerdy crap.

Verity had been run ragged this weekend, trying to corral the various cryptids and figuring out why most of them had gone nuts. THAT WAS NOT APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR FOR A JACKALOPE, OKAY?

Seeing a bunch of people head for Galactica point had gotten her curious enough to follow along and now, here she was, several guns and knives on her person, and ready for everything to go back to normal.

"Snickers?" Jenkins asked, offering her a king size candy bar.

Honestly, with that giant slushy, he looked rather more like he was waiting in line for a movie than waiting to enter the unknown subterranean workings of a magical island.

"You're looking...really casual about this," Verity noted, but took a Snickers anyway.

Look, you never knew when you might need a bit more energy. Or a potential bribe for something that liked chocolate an/or peanuts and/or nougat.

It always helps to be prepared.

Jenkins saluted her with the slushy. "Frozen fructose and water. Hydrating, cooling, good for short bursts of energy, and tasty. It's not the least cumbersome container, I will admit, but the gentleman at the Quick Stop didn't think we could fit the slushy nozzle into the mouth of a water skin."

"Fair enough," Verity said, grinning. She showed him the flask she had strapped to her thigh. "Gatorade."

C'mon, she wasn't about to bring alcohol to something like this. She needed to be clear-headed and hydrated.

"Not as tasty, but terribly effective," Jenkins said approvingly. "Clearly you're a young woman who's gone adventuring before."

"You should hear about my parents' idea of a graduation summer trip," Verity said wryly. "Or the occasional weekend getaway."

Both involved leaving her in a random location and trusting her to make her own way home. Graduation had just meant they were able to send her further afield.

"Considering your family business," Jenkins said. "I think I should rather hear about either. I'm sure they're fascinating."

And also very, very dangerous.

"When all of this is over, I'll pop by and share some stories," Verity said with a grin. "You sound like the first person outside the family I've ever met that would appreciate our take on hide-and-seek."

She rolled her eyes with fond annoyance. "My kid sister used to dig pit traps for the game."

"They are a classic," Jenkins said. "Though I do wonder how high you all counted, that she had time to dig."

"There was less a count and more a general announcement that the next day we'd be playing hide and seek and we should take the evening to prepare," Verity explained, pulling her hair back to keep it out of her face.

Or possibly 'explained.'

"Your family isn't terribly clear on the concept of 'play' are they," Jenkins observed.

"Not really," Verity admitted. "When you're up against a whole organization with a grudge and a penchant for extermination, play loses value when compared to learning how to stay alive. Once you start toddling, it's time for training to begin. I know I really concerned my parents for awhile because all I wanted to do was dance."

"Teaching via war games," Jenkins said. "I've known a few parents like that in my day as well."

His day being the Middle Ages.

"I shudder to think what 'duck duck goose' must have looked like."

Well, the Covenant still behaved like it was the Middle Ages, so...

"It was fine until we were old enough to be given weapons," Verity said brightly.

"And what age was that, exactly?"

"Depends on the type of weapon, really," Verity said with her most charming smile.

"Please, do elaborate."

"Bludgeoning comes before blades comes before guns," Verity said. Did that help? "And martial arts, but that's less getting weapons and more making sure we can protect ourselves without them."

"And the lectures on when it is appropriate to use any of these things happen . . . ?"

"Before we're allowed to pick up any of them," Verity told him. "We're cryptozoologists; we fight to protect ourselves and others from imminent danger. Acting otherwise makes us no better than the Covenant."

Not what you were expecting, Jenkins?

Jenkins nodded. "You were also children though," he said. "Allowing children to actually be children is one of the great accomplishments of the modern era."

"We had fun," Verity said. "We played games, they were just also training us to survive. Letting children be children doesn't take into account that there are things out there that would happily kill all of us if they could. Better to be alive than to be sad I didn't get a lemonade stand growing up."

Jenkins simply hummed thoughtfully in response.

"Yes?" Verity prompted.

This was her family you were judging.
