Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday
Zack was hard at work at Furnado today.
He was hauling in supplies to make a big enclosure up on the roof. A huge one. One that was closed in, of course. It was possible that he was hauling in soil and sod, and then lumber, and more chicken wire than any one person generally ever needed, and...
The little chickens were getting to be big chickens, and sure, they could all have fit into a big cardboard box when they came in, but now they were big enough that, if Zack didn't do something about this quickly, he was going to have to start rearranging dogs to fit them all without overcrowding. He suspected that they didn't have this many chickens in the past, that people generally kept it to bunnies around Easter and those were rehomed fairly quickly, but apparently 'giant bunny trauma' had unexpected results by way of irresponsible parents giving kids pets that nobody in the family intended to care for in the long run.
Woo.
So, that was going to be Zack's day. Building a huge enclosure on the roof, complete with a chicken coop and... a lawn. Because he didn't want chickens scrabbling around on something uncomfortable, don't judge him.
Furnado was open. Did anybody want a chicken?

There was no reason for her to explain anything. She'd just stepped into the shop, like a customer. But still. There she was, grave face on, half-sullenly establishing the clucking as her excuse.
no subject
"Yeah... that would be the chickens," he explained, a ridiculously large stack of lumber balanced on one shoulder. "We... have a lot of chickens, for some reason."
It was sad. More love for the chickens, people.

Rooster was not the word she used, but this was a family community.
no subject
And blinked again. Huh. That was definitely a word.
"I mean, they'll probably start laying eggs soon," he replied, reaching a hand up to scratch the back of his neck. "They're pretty young, but the vet tells me they will in a few more months."
no subject
She eyed the big feathery pile of... feathers. "Eggs actually come out of that?" she said. "I thought they'd be bigger."
no subject
"They're... young," he said again. Because he figured maybe she hadn't heard him the first time.
Well-Meaning Dim, meet Terminally Stupid.
no subject
"Or they got shrunk," she said.
There was something sort of soothing about them, though...
no subject
Zack hesitated, and then kind of hedged, "No, they're definitely young. We've had them since they were little chicks, they're growing, not shrinking."
Was she messing with him?
no subject
"So what came first?" she asked at last.
no subject
"I think it was that--" he paused. What breed did the vet say that one was? "... Wyandotte? She was definitely the first one to come in. The rest kind of trickled in after."
no subject
She was not joking. She genuinely needed to know this.
no subject
This was a super astute observation courtesy of Zack Fair.
no subject
"Then when does the egg bit come in?" she asked. "Her arse is round. I don't understand."
Oceans could be filled by what she did not understand.
no subject
"Her arse is round so that the eggs that come out of it later are round too," he said, because at this point he legitimately didn't know, and the veterinary staff all seemed to be edging away to leave him alone to this. "That's why you never see a square chicken."
Except in Minecraft.
no subject
"But what if they're in a box?" Philomena asked.
She helpfuly made a box shape with her hands.
no subject
He was reasonably certain that she was trolling him. Now he was just playing along.
no subject
No, Philomena. No, that was not how it worked.
One of the chickens waggled up to her, tilting its little head up, and letting out a stream of chittering.
no subject
"I don't know," he said instead. "Why don't you ask her?"
no subject
'Cos the box chicken thing could be a good science experiment!
That she'd get distracted before trying because the telly.
no subject
"You mean how much for the chicken?"
Could this woman handle a chicken?
no subject
It was certainly puffing itself up and chirping like that.
"Yea," Philomena said.
no subject
That seemed fair, given that their current chicken selection wasn't exactly clearing out very quickly.

Because roosters.
