The Park, and then the Trooper Station, Monday Morning

The trip back to Earth in the shuttle didn't take more than a few hours, but out of habit he ended up pulling out of ID space just over DC, instead of Fandom Island.

"That's weird," he mused, noting the absence of the Taelon Embassy in the city's skyline as he flew towards the coast. He figured the government must have decided to tear it down after the Taelons had left. A few minutes later, the navigational computer pinged to let him know he was approaching Fandom and he began the landing sequence. The virtual glass had barely dissolved and he was just stepping out when a person in strange white and blue came stalking up.

Liam tensed, curling his hands in to fists as his palms began to itch. Blowing something up immediately after touching down would be a hell of a first impression, and one he kind of wanted to avoid.

"Fair enough. If you manage somehow to get lost, I basically have a view of the beach from my front door. Just follow the shoreline until you reach civilization again and you'll make it there eventually."

"I'll keep that in mind," Liam promised. "Anything else I should know about?"

"If anything tries to bite you between here and the house, don't let it," Nathan offered. "Especially anything little and green. Beyond that, nothing terribly pressing that we can't talk about later. But I can walk you through some island survival basics, things you'll need in order to get by here, that sort of thing, if you like."

"'Don't get bit' seems like a pretty solid start," Liam acknowledged. "So sure, might as well get the crash course."

"Okay then," Nathan said, and then smirked faintly. "You're going to think I'm hazing you or something, but stop me the first time something I list off sounds weird, alright?"

He titled his head a bit.

"Let's start with aliens?"

Well, that was weird, but probably not for the reasons Nathan might assume.

"Should all be dead or gone?"

If there were more Taelons or Atavus hanging around and he'd gone and died for nothing, he'd be annoyed.

"Huh. Not necessarily the reason I figured we'd be derailing this one, but," Nathan shrugged. What was there to be done about that around here? "Some of the students are aliens. Possibly not from races you've ever encountered. The multiverse doesn't always work the way you'd expect it to. But I guarantee, they aren't all dead and gone."

"The multiverse," oh, you had his attention now. Well, more of his attention.

"It's where all the universes live," Nathan supplied. Helpfully. "Beyond that, don't ask me to explain what I know about it. I'm from a time far enough back that machine-assisted flight still boggles my mind. If you want to know more about how to navigate it beyond paying for a portal ticket, I'm not the person to ask on that one."

"Oh, well, Portals I know about," Liam said confidently. Yeah, dealing with Portalocity rather than the Portal Authority was going to be... interesting.

"Wait, back up a second, what do you mean, 'from a time far enough back'?"

He'd time-traveled once too (because he was from syndicated Sci-Fi TV land), but it hadn't exactly been what he would call a good experience.

"Try late nineteenth century," Nathan offered. "Provided you're even from a place that uses Earth's standard for measuring time, I suppose."

Far enough back!

"I mean, not anymore, but we didn't switch over that long ago," Liam said with a frown. "You're not messing with me," he said, and it was more of a statement than a question.

"I have smarter things to do with my time than mess with the island's new sheriff on his first day of work," Nathan confirmed with a shrug of his shoulders. "It's currently June 19th, in the year 2017. Aliens live on the island - they're mostly benevolent, or at the very least as neutral as the humans around here are - as well as humans with powers beyond the baseline, and people from worlds with magic, and stranger."

Hell, his boss was some manner of immortal and he was pretty sure one of his students was an elf. So.

"Well, the date lines up," Liam said thoughtfully. "Sort of. But all that other stuff is..." he trailed off, still not quite sure what to make of it. "And you said before you weren't familiar with Jaridians... what about the Taelons? Or the Atavus?"

"No and no," Nathan replied, shaking his head. "Other alien races, I assume? I'm not personally familiar with the particulars of most aliens, I'll admit. As much as I'd love to learn about them."

That sort of thing fascinated him to no end.

"Yeah," Liam nodded. "Where I'm from, an alien species called the Taelons arrived on Earth about nine years ago. They claimed to be benevolent; turns out they weren't so much."

And well, if he wanted to learn about aliens, he'd picked up the right tenant. Not only was Liam one-third alien himself, he had the knowledge of infinite races in his head. Assuming, of course, Liam ever actually spilled those particular beans.

"Ah," Nathan replied, nodding a little. "A concept I'm not terribly unfamiliar with, actually. Even if extraterrestrials were never involved in the history I do know."

Replace 'Taelons' with 'white people,' and you more or less had a story that went way back.

Liam's smiled turned a little bitter at that. "A fact they never hesitated to point out whenever someone attempted to call them on their bullshit."

"I don't suppose they ever bothered to look too hard into the 'two wrongs don't make a right' thing, then."

Of course not. Nathan sighed.

"Fantastic. Well. Welcome to Fandom, then, where hostile invasions only happen every few months or so, and usually turn out fairly alright for the home team."
