Once again, Jono was here for rehearsal, though rehearsal this week actually had a prompt, it seemed.

//So, next weekend, Fandom Pride,// he announced as people arrived. //Looking for volunteers to play music at th'picnic on Sunday. And, ah, a set list. Anybody know any good Pride songs?//

Or songs that could be Pride songs? He was kind of side-eyeing 'True Colors,' but wasn't entirely certain that anybody in the band would be too enthused about playing that one anyway. Over the Rainbow? Born This Way? It's Raining Men?

God, this was not as easy as it looked.

Starsmore'd be wise not to underestimate Dante's somewhat-repressed camp streak.

Though for the moment, he was waltzing in with his guitar slung over his shoulder and a casual, "What, like a metal Lady Gaga cover?"

//... I would happily perform a metal Lady Gaga cover,// Jono admitted, after a moment's pause. //Could be fun.//

"Just sayin' we could do worse than guitars growling on Born This Way," Dante said, smirking.

He sank down into a seat.

//We could lead everybody in a rousing chorus of Kumbaya,// Jono agreed. //I'm not exactly Gaga's biggest fan, but at least I can see the appeal.//

Dante snickered. "Hey, we can metal cover... whatever the hell else you got in mind too."

[furnaceface]

//... Probably not Kumbaya, then,// Jono replied, squinting one eye thoughtfully. //Maybe some Queen, though. Nothing says 'fuck everything, this is Pride' like Freddie Mercury.//

Really, now.

Dante snickered softly. "Just don't expect me to run around with a vacuum cleaner or get in on any of the depressing tunes."

"I'm still not clear on this whole Pride concept," admitted Peebee, who was swiveling back and forth on the drumkit stool today. Sure, she could have looked it up, but she'd been distracted by other things, like figuring out how to go exploring out on the mainland without having to wear a really annoying disguise.

"Why not?" Dante asked casually, leaning back.

Peebee shrugged. "I just . . . well, okay, I'm clear on the concept. I mean, I get the idea behind it. I get that it's kind of a big, important thing here. It just sort of boggles my mind that it --"

She shrugged again, a little bit helplessly. "Gender isn't even really a concept for asari, so I guess just -- the fact that some people get so hung up on it that it makes events like this necessary is a little bit astounding."

Wow, that had been unusually sincere, but she'd been thinking about it since the flyers had gone up.

"It's fucking stupid," Dante said, shrugging his shoulders too. "That we gotta, I mean. But as long as we gotta, might as well give a big middle finger to all the shitheads, right?"

Peebee burst out laughing. "No, you know what? Now that you put it that way, it makes a whole lot more sense. I'm in, absolutely. Also, can we just pretend that moment of me being serious never happened?"

"Sure," Dante said, ginning easily. Then-- "Though I gotta know about that gender part. What's up with that?"

"Ugh, I thought we were done with me being serious," Peebee mock-complained, rolling her eyes, but she broke off into a smile. "We're a mono-gendered race. Some of the matriarchs try to make it out to be a lot more complex than it is, but it's pretty simple, really. For us, anyway."

She paused.

"A binary concept of gender is still dumb, though."

[furnaceface]

Jono had interacted enough with Asari before to kind of have a vague idea of where Peebee was coming from, on this one. He nodded a little, and then waved a hand around vaguely.

//Humans are weird,// he settled on. //And far too often, terrible to one another for the most stupid reasons.//

"Weird, yes," Peebee allowed with a slightly mischievous grin. "Though not the only ones who can be terrible to each other for stupid reasons."

Much as some asari might like to insist otherwise. They just had thousands of years to refine the way they could be terrible to each other.

"This stupid reason is new to me, though."

[furnaceface]

//I'd rather it wasn't a thing at all,// Jono admitted, wrinkling his nose a bit. //Hell, I never really thought much about how it applied to me until I attended Pride in Baltimore with my husband.//

He'd kind of had other 'humans are being terrible for stupid reasons' issues to worry about for most of his life to this point.

//Honestly not certain I'm the most qualified person to be organizing any of this, but I know that's gobshite. It isn't like there's some sort of entrance exam for stepping up as a member of a marginalized community beyond... being that.//

"Because there shouldn't be one," Peebee said promptly. "I mean, really, what other qualification do you need?"

[furnaceface]

Jono shrugged his shoulders a little.

//This particular community is an odd one,// he said, after a moment. //Always debating on the inside about who does and doesn't belong. Never really considered my place in it before, I was always defined by other things. Other, louder things.//

Though nobody could deny these days that he was quite clearly flaming.

Ahem.

[sharp_man]

"I'm afraid I'm mostly out, as I'll be organizing the food," Hannibal said. "But if you need keyboards or theremin for a song or two, I'll be there."

He thought about the songs. "What sort of genre did you have in mind?"

//I think we're leaning metal,// Jono mused, shrugging his shoulders. //Seems to appeal more to the kids.//

'The kids.'

Himself included, admittedly.

Hannibal gave Jono an amused look for that. "Well, are there any metal bands that tend toward gay anthems?"

There was always Judas Priest.

[furnaceface]

//Dante and I threw around Queen a lot?//

Which was not metal. Jono knew this.

[sharp_man]

Hannibal nodded thoughtfully. "I could handle that piano." And some of it was nicely orchestral, which was a bonus.

//I figured you might,// Jono agreed, cheerfully. //Might even have fun doing it. I'm guessing you can probably get a sous chef to watch the food for a few songs, right?//
