Of course the Carnival offers plenty of food too, and there are rides and games for everyone to enjoy.

Anders wasn't much for rides in general, but no one from Thedas could resist a chance to ride a gryphon -- even a painted wooden one. He gripped the pole as he went up and down, letting out a quiet 'whee' when he thought no one was watching.

But what if the person watching was his much-amused girlfriend, standing on the sidelines?

"My, what a strong and handsome gryphon-rider," she called, hands clasped over her heart. "My hero."

"Regular champion, I am," Anders called back easily. "You're just jealous you don't have a griffin of your own to ride."

"I'm holding out for a unicorn," Kathy declared. "Finally one I can ride without worry it's gonna throw me off."

Because...yeah. She hadn't been unicorn-eligible for a long time.

She hopped over the turnstile and made her way over to the ride, pausing a second to time her jump up onto it, grabbing hold of a pole to help steady herself. "Hey, there," she greeted him. "Going my way?"

"Only way there is to go," Anders said, and reached to give her hand a squeeze. "But it's nice to have you along for the ride."

Kathy smiled at him, twining her fingers through his and settling on the creature next to his gryphon. A pegasus; not her plan for a unicorn but cool anyway. "Happy Homecoming," she told him. "Did you win last year?"

"I have no idea," Anders said honestly. "I don't think so. I skipped the dance."

Here, in the sunlight, with Kathy beside him the old wound didn't hurt so much.

"Did you win the year before that?"

"It was a threeway tie," Kathy said with a small smile. "Ezra was king, and Alana, Gwen Stacy, and I were queens. We might have been the only ones to vote, now that I think about it."

If she'd thought about why Anders had skipped the dance, she might have been a little less blase about it.

It was all right; it wasn't really a memory that warranted closer investigation.

"Or else everyone in the class knew you four were obviously superior and gave up," Anders answered readily. "I would have voted for you, if I could've."

"And I would have danced with you, if I could have," she said with a fond smile. "I think Ex bailed early to bang Dante and Isabela and Alana and I danced together. Then Raven and I went back to our dorm for a decadent night of cheesy horror movies and ice cream."

It had been a really great night, all told. But she was pretty sure this year would be better.

"Think Dante's gonna win this year?"

"Probably," Anders said, after a moment's thought. "I don't even know who the other seniors in his class are. Can't be anyone very important."

"Not that you're biased at all," Kathy teased. "There's the really pretty guy I met at your graduation who has barely been out because I am the worst? Otherwise, I have no idea."

"Hyacinthe," Anders reminded her. "And if they vote just for pretty, he might even have a chance."

"Mean," Kathy said laughing. "Though--c'mon. If pretty isn't the main criterion, what is? I was really excited when I thought everyone thought I was pretty enough to be queen!"

"I wasn't trying to be mean," Anders protested, laughing. "I just meant, sometimes they vote for someone who seems interesting. Alana was pretty, but she wasn't exactly the prettiest in your year. I think she got points for the wings."

"Alana was gorgeous," Kathy said. "If I were gonna have a girl-crush on someone who wasn't Isabela--" who was the Avatar of sex and didn't count "--it probably would have been her."

She winked. "But apparently I'm more into younger guys."

A pause to consider and then she teased, "Wait. If they voted for Alana's wings, why'd they vote for me?"

"Your legs," Anders said, hoping he hadn't talked his way into a corner. "Your ass. Your smile. And that you've got a good heart on top of it all."

He was laying it on a little thick, but it was all true.

Like Kathy was going to object to getting compliments from her boyfriend. If anything, she smiled a little brighter with every one, then leaned in to kiss him when he was done.

"I'm totally okay with getting votes for those," she told him with a waggle of her brows. "Feel like 'voting' for them tonight?"

"And every other night of our lives," Anders murmured, as he came out of the kiss. "Is that all right?"

"More than all right," she told him. "It's perfect."

Thinking about the future didn't seem scary at all when he talked about it like that.
