Octavia was eyeing the funnel cakes with some mild doubt. Deep frying was, unsurprisingly, not something she'd gotten used to either up on the Ark nor down on the ground.

She made a dry noise of amusement. "Sounds like I'd fit right in."

He offered her a little with a cheerfully expectant look. "Probably now that Wonderland is gone."

"I don't know what that means."

She took a piece of funnel cake, though. And held it up to her nose, briefly, before biting into it and chewing thoughtfully.

Look, new things were serious business.

She didn't spit it out! That counted as a victory.

"Way worse place. Run by these liches? And they turned me into a mannequin for a little while, but I got better."

It was okay. Kind of weird in texture, though, but at least she finished the piece she'd taken.

Although she raised an eyebrow at him while she was still chewing. "But that's... over now?"

"Yep, I'm a fleshboy again." Oh god, that sounded awful. "Sorry, a kid I know said that once."

"Fleshboy," Octavia repeated.

Yes, she knew he'd already said sorry.

She was going to judge him regardless.

"Yeah, it was weird then too. Made him pretty suspicious." Thank god he didn't end up being the murderer.

"Right," Octavia replied. "Look, you know that pretty much every explanation you give just invites more questions, right?"

He had to know.

"No? I mean. It's just this kid we met on a train who turned out to be the world's greatest detective and helped us solve a murder mystery." See, clear and concise!

Octavia raised her eyebrows. "That didn't actually explain anything," she said. "See, this is why I'm not asking you to explain this --" She gestured at the carnival at large. "-- to me, either."

Despite the fact that she definitely Did Not Get It.

"I totally explained Angus!" Also, the listeners didn't want a recap. "This is a carnival. You know. A party?"

Granted, Octavia's frame of reference for parties wasn't very broad at all.

"It's a specific type of party," Magnus assured her. "Where you have rides and games and fried food."

She still didn't see the point. But she was intrigued, despite herself.

"Oh man, you have got to go on some of them. I can come with if you want." Also to have an excuse to act like a kid and enjoy himself.

Octavia gave the rides she could see a critical look. It was a weird week and she was trying to understand her surroundings.

"Which one would you go for?"

Magnus looked over for a good beginner ride. You know, rides 101.

"Ferris wheel? Then you get a look at everything."

That was about all the agreement he was likely to get.
